Do these cars use chips or what?
I owned a 98 BMW M3 before this and several other german cars which all take a simple chip. When you do modifications on these lancers do they still take aftermarket chips or do you have to reprogram the ECU or are there piggyback add-ons? I am just not sure since this is my first turbo car. I am wanting to do alot of engine modifications to this Evo and I am wondering what I do in terms of software and who to get it from?
No physical chips for the Evo, but there are 2 vendors (RMR and WORKS) offering re-flashed ECUs. These services will actually re-flash your current ECU with new fuel, timing, and boost settings to increase hp and torque. There's a few customers with RMR re-flashes and WORKS just released theirs, so you can try browsing or searching the forums for some more info.
RMR: http://www.rmrproducts.com
WORKS: http://www.worksrally.com
You can also look into piggy-back combos like the Apexi SAFC, AVCR, and ITC or similar units from HKS, GReddy, or other manufacturers. These units will allow you to adjust fuel, boost, and timing respectively. The problem with something like this is that you'll require 3 different units in the car that you'd have to adjust. Each company offers various features and designs, so I would recommend doing some searches on forums to find out more about them if this is the route you'd like to take.
There's also another piggy-back system available called the XEDE, which allows adjustment of fuel, timing, and boost through a laptop. Vishnu also offer base maps based on their own stage packages, but you can purchase the software license to tune the unit yourself if you like. There's a ton of features for the XEDE, which you can read about here: http://www.vishnutuning.com/xede_evo.htm
There's also another system from GReddy called the E-manage. I know very little about this one, but there's a few members on the site using this, such as Alfriedesq. Fully accessorized, it can adjust fuel, timing, and boost I believe.

Im leaning more towards a piggyback system, do you think this would probably be better? The reason I think so is not only can you adjust alot of the settings yourself but you dont have to send your ECU in everytime to get "re-flashed" if you have anew modification you added. That could be a pain. Which one do you feel is the better of the two? I was looking at the XEDE and it looks really cool, I am going to look more into it. Thanks for your info, it was very useful!
No problem. It really comes down to your needs, budget, and personal preference. If you plan to tune your own vehicle, then you can take advantage of a piggy back system like the XEDE. Re-flashing the ECU will also provide benefits and may fit within your modification path, but you may have to provide your ECU each time. You might want to check with RMR and WORKS on how they handle that.

Chris,
There is a dyno day happening next weekend at Matrix Engineering (at the north end of Macadam). Saturday is all WRX's and Sunday is 4 Evo's (with the first starting at 9am). Shiv from Vishnu will be there doing the tuning on Matrix's all wheel dyno. Come on down and meet some other Evo owners and the man behind Vishnu. Check out the Matrix web site for more information on them:
