well **** i know how the BOV works ive just never heard of it as a "diverter valve"

The diverter valve is just what Mitsubishi calls the BOV. The BOV "diverts", or bypasses(vents), excess charge air which builds up between the compressor housing outlet and the closed throttle plate.

The wastegate on the other hand, vents excess exhaust gases once your preset boost level has been reached. It bleeds exhaust gases before they flow through the scroll of the turbine housing, thus limiting the revolutions of the turbine wheel.
