Noise coming from clutch? Chatter? Throw out bearing?

Im going to make this short and sweet. I bought this car used with an aftermarket clutch.

If im cruising along at any speed, let off the gas but keep the car in gear... you can hear a chattering or so from the transmission area. Its not real loud, but loud enough to hear it.

If im stopped completley and dont have the clutch in, you can hear the noise. But if I press the clutch in, the noise goes away & the car is dead silent, the way it should be. You can barely hear it on the outside of the car, but still noticeable if you look for it.

What do you think it may be? I have 22k miles on the car.

I just got ahold of the previous owners dad (google searched his name off the title). He said they had a new clutch put in just a month ago, and kept saying how bad the labor was, he paid $800 just in labor.

(I bought this car from a dealership too, where they traded it in, so he has no reason to lie to me.)

He said he was going to have his son try & call me, who was the actual owner of the car. Hopefully I can find out what kind of clutch it is.

I agree. Throw out bearing. My Mirage does it sometimes, and my EVO does it. Never caused my any problems other than annoying me.

I agree it they put a new stock clutch in then it has to be the TOB and I doubt that it is a problem. When you have to replace the clutch again just put in a new TOB. Otherwise I would not worry about it. You will find that these cars make lots on interesting noises, most of which you do not have to worry about.

It's not the throwout bearing. If it were the bearing it wouldn't change whether you are on the throttle or not and noise usually gets louder when you are on the clutch pedal, not off. It sounds like gear noise to me and gear noise is usually more common with aftermarket clutches since the dampening in the disc is different and won't tend to dampen out the torsional vibrations the same as the stock parts.

Pop the rubber plug out of the lower bell housing and you should be able to see which clutch is in there.

I have this same problem as crackerjack and i bought my car used also. It has an exedy twin disc. So am i safe to assume there should be no problems?

The gear noise resulting from typical torsional vibrations are usually under no/low load conditions and therefore normally not harmful to the transmission. However, increasing the engine's torsional vibrations (noise or not) whether it be from much higher boost, more timing, lighter flywheel, etc is going to be harder on the disc center section, such as the splines and spring cages which can take a beating.

To illustrate the last point, if you ran a solid center puck disc (no dampening whatsoever) on a SB Chevy with similar power output and theoretically using the same spline size, it might last 150K miles, but on an EVO it may only last 10K. Some of that is because of the difference in weight of the rotating mass, and some is because a V8 has much less violent torsional vibrations to begin with.

Hm, say again? Any pics or diagram where I can locate this plug? I would LOVE to see what clutch was put in.
