Case Study # 404 - You can not ever boost leak test too much !

Turbo charged cars operate in extreme conditions and under the streess of vibration, noise and under movement with vibration and bumps and thermal stress

The charge system of a tubro charged vehicle is constantly being pressurized and contracted - over and over

Every time you heat cycle a car - you put stress on the turbo charger and plumbing systems the fmic itself - related pipes and couplers all being twisted and pulled and shook apart at all times

Through in a few good bumps and some vibration and you can see that its not suprizing to hear that frequently boost leaks can and will develop over time and that good practice is to frequently check for boost leaks.

This past week I was at the WRX vs EVO shootout in Ohio and I was doing my very first run in 4th gear headed to a great mid 9 second pass (hopefully) when a vac cap under the dash split in half this making a 1/8th size hold - (boost leak)

When you review this chart you can clearly see how the boost falls down after the vac cap breaks off - the turbo just cant supply enough air to supply both the engine as "X" amount of boost and also fill the hole in the system

That failure cost me big time - I was on my way to a really good run and after the leak the car fell flat for the last 2 10ths. After that the car would not even build full boost in 1st gear.

This chart shows the exact spot where the leak started It was a small eough leak I could not located it by just looking about - it took a pressuraized boost leak check to identify the specifc area of the leak

PLEASE - evo owners - make and get used to using your own boost leak tester at least onece every two months.

A lot of Evo owners drive about with small boost leaks and dont even realize it = they jusy get used to a slow car.

On my race car it gets a boost leak test everytime I race it - period

I point all of this out in the hop to better eductae my customers and the evo community of the importance of boost leak testing and also how boost leaks can easily develop with normal driving
