HELP Figure out noise......

Ok my evo has been casuing me nothing but headaches this spring/summer already now I need to figure out what this sound is.

NOISE: Occurs during startup, as the car fires I get a clunking/rattle untill RPMS get higher, also occurs at low RPM's such as backing up my driveway in reverse and letting the cars RPMs go low while in gear. Also occured last week when I reset my ECU and my rpms would drop around 500-700 RPM when it was trying to find idle as I came to a light in nutral or just with the clutch in. Can hear it while turning tight such as a parking space

Now just a bit of recent history first so you know what has been done to the car lately.

-Replaced powersteering line, to do that had to drop the subframe, in doing that I tore both inner c/v boots and lost my A/C.

-Same day as I was doing the line I installed a used set of stock 03 shocks, espiler GT springs w/ tien camber plates (sold to me already assembled with about 7k miles on them)

-Next removed ATP GT3076R and installed evo 9 turbo, installed that no problem all is well.

-Installed rear sway bar stock w/ endlinks

Then I developed the rattling/clunking seems like the drivers side front, so I figured that maybe the axle went bad due to the boot tear, finally locate and buy one install it yesterday not the problem......

Today I thought maybe a motor mount got loose from the sub frame assembly, front is tight, rear is tight, pass side good couldent get to drivers side, all subframe bolts/nuts are good/tight.

Is their anyone else with a idea? Throw out bearing? seems too loud for that, any bushings I can look into? ANYTHING?!?!?!?! Its driving me nuts!!!! thanks for the hlep in advance!

Where is the old turbo setup? Jk. So this noise is only when you are driving? It is not the DP vibrating on something? Are the springs OK? Did you drop in a socket/bolt somewhere in the car? Engine compartment? When does it NOT make the noise?

DP is ok I found a large rubber piece (similar size to a flat eraser) and lodged it in between frame and DP just in case. Springs are my next possibility gonna look at them see if they are seated properly. It dosent make the noise at any speed going strait, or turning while moving. Just low speeds into say a parking spot, while just getting it into reverse, and start up or when RPMs drop (while my ECU is resetting itself)

Motor mounts secure? Motor pitches forward when you go backwards, thus putting the DP in contact with something? add the engine vibration, could be your sound? Did you remove the tiebars and try to see if the noise is still there?

Take out the crossmembers under the car as a test, to see if that does anything.

If it only happens while turning, I am trying to figure out what moves/binds where. I am drawing a blank. Can you swap drivers spring with the passenger spring? Maybe it is not in the perch correctly. Keep us posted on what you find. OUR collective evo brains will help you figure it out.

Ok so far today the rattle at low rpms, backing up ect is the TOB rattle. I know this now because with the car off, clutch in rolling down my driveway when I release the pedal fast I hear 1-2 clunks identical to the "noise"

Now the turning clunk I think was the DP hitting the front crossmember and the oil pan it was very close to both I used a clean rag folded over and jammed it in their so I can go out now and test it.

So am I screwed about the TOB? Will it need to be replaced???? I just put in a new one and a ACT street 2600 about 12,000 miles ago, no launching, no track days just street driving. Or can I just drive on it? Maybe this is a normal evo sound for most people???

I was backing and turning with my DSM and hit a post with the tire only - no body damage and afterwards I had this noise like you. The strut was sprung. It could be that one of the used ones you installed was already toast. Check for any sideways play.

Did you put a new TOB on there with the clutch? Lowering springs or coilovers? I had the Tein "S" Techs, and knew they messed up the stock steering geometry, and could potentially blow the struts over time, so I got rid of them. If it is solely the TOB sound, could be normal? Not sure. I would change it if you can get it done for cheap........AFTER you rule out the springs or DP issue. I put a few washers under each bolt of the 2 crossmember bars to give me more clearence from the DP. It worked.

I was able to reach in with the weight of the car on the wheels and wiggle the strut reproducing the noise. I should add that this occurred after two weeks of parts replacing and head scratching.

if you can turn the springs wit the wieght of the car on them then your car is to low. this would cause safety concerns and a turning noise. safety dew to suspesion travel if there is not enough travel your will bottom out eventually witch can bend or destroy suspension parts.
