No 2nd Gear - All other gears fine

I believe I may have bent a shift fork or blew out the syncros for 2nd gear last night. I missed 3rd (locked out, didn't engage, some grinding action), so I backed out and slowly put it into 3rd, everything seemed fine. A few minute later the 3rd to 4th transition felt kinda "clunky," but engaged correctly. On my way home, a few hours later, I went to downshift into 2nd and got nothing, only syncro grind and vibration, it would not engage. I inspected the shifter bushings today, everything appears to be fine, also inspected what I could of the shift cables, which appear to be ok as well. I test drove it this morning and all of the gears engaged smoothly, yet it still will not engaged into 2nd.

I am going to bring it to the stealership tomorrow, but just curious what I could have done? I was thinking 2nd gear shift fork or syncro? Thoughts/Opinions? Will they replace the damaged parts or replaced the entire tranny?

Thanks!

Nope, does the same thing whether in motion or at a dead stop. I tried double clutching and everything, nothing seems to work. It must be something inside the tranny.

I also tried to manually engage it into second on top of the transmission attempting to bypass any complications that could be causing it up stream (i.e. bend shift cable, shifter bushing beneath the console, etc) and it still doesn't seem to want to go into 2nd.

I'm ready for a battle if they want to bring it, but they'd treated me pretty good so far. There is no way they SHOULD give you crap about intake/tbe, they would not be able to correlate any drivetrain problems to either. Magnuson Moss Act (sp?) says they have to prove that the modification was the DIRECT cause of the problem.

Worst part is, I had a track day scheduled for tomorrow . Couldn't have happened at a worse time. Oh well, good thing I didn't have to pay for it. I still have to go and instruct though, so that will be salt in my wound. Everyone gets to drive but Davey.

To update the situation... I've heard back from the stealership and they have approved the transmission to be repaired under warranty, so that's a relief. Apparently they had to have some factory specialist come in to look at it (apparently they do this for all EVO's), not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. I also am having them replace the steering wheel because my 6 o'clock seam is peeling again, it was already replaced once. The factory guy said he saw some marks on the wheel and they asked me if I had installed something onto the steering wheel (what the hell?), like it was MY fault that it was peeling? They made sure to tell me this was the LAST steering wheel that they would approve to be replaced under warranty?! I also told them to look at the driver front window, it wiggles while halfway down, it's loose, right? According to the factory rep, it is within a reasonable amount of movement and is "normal."

No idea what is actually wrong with the tranny yet, but will post when that information becomes available.

if you have problems getting into a gear with the car on or off then thats something internal to the trans. If it only does it with the engine running then I would say its a clutch disengagement issue.

from what you are describing it sounds to me like you have a hub/sleeve problem. Why it did it after your 3rd gear incident I cannot explain, that is odd. Reason being your 3rd gear hub/sleeve is paired with 4th gear on the other shaft. Its no where near the 1-2 hub/sleeve which is on the another shaft. Either way Im sure you have some debris in the trans which is causing the hang up on the sleeve, which has probably damaged the synchro and maybe even the gear itself.

I dont know of a dealer that even works on internal trans problems anymore. Mainly bc a lot of your dealers dont want to pay for a skilled tech, its unfortunate. They would rather just force the customer into buying an entire trans assembly and just popping it in. Lucky for you they are covering it under warranty.

Update:

So, the shift fork BROKE OFF they say, apparently they are ordering parts, must be fixing it as opposed to installing a new tranny?

They also mentioned that my clutch doesn't look in very good shape, not 5k miles shape anyway . They are going to see if they will cover it, but she said she would like to install a new clutch while everything is apart. I told them if it is NOT covered, then I'd rather they do NOT install a new clutch because I don't have the money for it (aka I'd rather install a better aftermarket anyway). Of course I am NOT anticipating for the clutch to be covered, but I am going to keep my mouth shut until they tell me so.

IF I were going that route, I would bring it to John at TRE, only 45 minute drive from my house.

*Update*

Talked to the dealership today and they said that not all of the parts came in as they expected (surprise) and should be receiving the rest within the next couple of days. Good news is they ARE replacing my clutch under warranty (not sure how I managed that, but I did). Bad news is they will most likely have my car until mid-next week, which would make 2½ weeks total that they've had my car.

They gave me a 2005 Sterile/Dull/Boring Gray Camry, but it's not EVO IX MR and I am starting to miss my car (especially anytime a Camaro, Trans AM, or Corvette pulls up beside me).
