My pressure drops to maybe 10psi at idle when HOT.

What is specified pressure at idle on an Evo?

I know my VW should be 29psi, 2000rpm at 180deg oil temp.

Haha, you can "oh boy me, stay away from cars" all you want. I've had this car since late November and probably know more about it than 90% of the people here.

If you think not filling the oil filter won't cause a problem... I dare you to do it for a year. You guys aren't half as bright as you think you are. So the evo doesn't run the oil pump off a serpentine belt... Oh no!

Chris, I'm sure you think you know everything about cars. I'm sure you know more than me. But again, I dare you to install your oil filter dry for a year and see what type of problems crop up.

If its not a big deal, I'm sure you won't mind doing it for us as a test right?

It was perfect so i pulled back out and noticed the light was gone then i hit another red light and it started like blinking and fading like it couldnt decide whether to be on our off. What i noiced is when i tapped the gas it would go off right away and also does not turn on when im driving. So on my drive home tonight sometmes it would blink and fade rapidly when i was a complete stop but at other stops it wouldnt turn on. It never comes on while im driving. Im pretty stumped any ideas? sorry if my grammer and spelling is bad im posting from my cellphone!

thanks in advance!
This is not a
"ho-hum" problem that get's over looked and you can "get to it when I have a chance",you should be getting this checked out before you even start and drive the car again. It may be something simple as an oil pressure sender or wiring but what if it is not? Save yourself alot of money (and headache's)and get it checked out today,or before you start and drive your car again.
Put it this way,if you had $10,000 in your checking account and wrote out a check for $20.00 and it bounced, when would you be calling your bank to find out why? Would you just write out another check or would you be right down at the bank?........That is what I thought and this should be treated the same way,if you like your car that is.
I would hook up a mechanical oil pressure gauge first thing and see what oil pressure you have while idling and your oil light is flashing,if it is within spec's then check your oil pressure sender for fault,if it is indeed reading 0 psi then you are looking at more serious problems (oil pump failure, oil pump strainer plugged up or first try just changing your oil filter as that only cost less than $6.00)
Get it checked out though ASAP.....
BTW,as posted eariler in thread the oil pump IS driven by your T-Belt so if your engine is running your oil pump drive is turning/spinning.

I'd try a new sender (the oil switch on the engine). It seems that this is a pretty common problem on the IX's.

If that doesn't fix it then head for the shop and have your mechanic install a gage to obtain an actual reading. The minimum oil pressure reading for a hot engine at idle is 4.2 psi. If your oil pressure is lower than this then it is probably caused by worn bearings.

BTW, I'd say that installing an empty filter will cause about the same amount of wear on the bearings as starting the engine - in other words, not much. Still, it is a good idea for those people who are particular about their cars. However, I'd not be afraid to take the dry filter for a year challenge anytime on any car.

ok i checked everything i could of thought of and took your suggestion......it was nothing i could find....so i got it towed to dentsport garage. They looked at everything and said the car was getting plenty of oil pressure. They finally concluded that my battery was losing alot of charge at idle and causing the light to flicker. Replaced the battery and the light hasn't come on in about 4 days. Thanks for everybody help!

Oh i dont know if i said it but as soon as the light came on i parked the car and did not drive it. I suggest if anybody has a similar problem DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR.

Well, this exact same thing happened to my car tonight! Then what is worse, is that a weird smell started coming into the cabin...paniced and parked the car on the side of the road and had it towed to the shop.

My can just came from the shop after being tuned, oil change, filter change, the Cam timing readjusted, the cams removed, and the hydraulic lifters cleaned. Changed from Motul 300v oil to Liquimoly 20w-60. I am really worried about my car. This is the second time that the oil pressure light comes on during idle....

last week, the car started to heat up while I am stuck in traffic...the temp would go back to normal when I started moving again. I thought i was just thermostat from lack of use, and the car was driving normal. One time I was stuck in traffic, and the temp went up almost to the H level, and this was the time the oil pressure light first came on flickering at idle.

Hope nothing serious is wrong with the car! Hope I didn't do anything wrong with it....

haha i think you should go back to Hondas. ok lets say you are working on a car where the oil filter needs to be turned horizontal to be screwed onto the spindle. You cant possibly fill it with oil because when you turn it sideways, it would all spill out, wouldnt it? so how does it get filled? If you say magic your wrong, its filled by the oil pump!!!o wow. Have you ever been under a car when the filter was not on and it was started briefly? my guess is no, because you would notice that it would take all of ONE SECOND to fill an oil filter, becuase oil absolutly GUSHES out of the spindle going into the filter. So putting an oil filter on dry for 30k miles, 2 years at 3k mile oil changes, like myself, you would never see any ill effect.

Me> You. I WIN!!!

my light comes on at idle, when I rev it goes away, changed oil and filter still doing it. Lifted the car up and found the gasket from the oil return hose off the turbo. But, I have had the problem before and it magically when away. I ordered two gaskets (upper and lower) and the sender just to be sure. I always thought it was the cams.
