Basic performance mod questions

Hey all, I'm new to this site. I own a 2002 Z28 and a 1996 TA vert, but I love all performance cars. I'm posted on behalf of my friend who just bought a 2005 EVO. I'll be doing any performance installs on his car, lol. I have no idea what basic mods should be done in what order or what the better brands to get are.

His goals are to make 350 wheel hp and preferably to keep the stock catback so that the car remains somewhat stealthy. I figure we will start with the basic cold air, and turning up the boost, but before doing anything I figured I'd ask the people who know these cars. Can anyone point in the best direction?

I appologize of you've heard the same question 1000 times before, and I appreciate any and all advice given.

Thanks!

I'm running the Injen SES catback and people ask me if I even have an exhaust. It looks stock, and is very quiet until you really get on it.

You could still have searched.....and no this has been asked 100,000 x's.....not 1000.

I would start here....

MBC
Tune
TBE
Intake

....I wouldn't keep the stock exhaust. Just find a quiet one...there are quiet ones out there...

Have fun and good luck!

Get a testpipe (cat delete), MBC, Cone filter intake, GSC S1 cams and a (good) custom tune.

He will love the car

your shooting your self in the foot if you keep the stock catback on. Also 350whp is very subjective. Here in cali with 91oct and most of the bay area mustang dyno's you wont hit 350whp without a turbo upgrade or race gas. If your on a dynojet dyno with 93-95oct then it shouldnt be a problem but you will need

Turbo back exhaust
test pipe(cat delete)
drop in filter(dont waist your time with a intake at this point)
lower intercooler pipe
cams (GSC s1, hks 272'2 ect just dont go too big)
o2 housing(do it when you do the exhaust/downpipe cause its a pain to install)
evo IX bov(DONT DO A AFTERMARKET BOV)
larger fmic(not needed but helps a bit and usually makes cars less sensative to timing)
AND the most important of them all..........
A good custom duno tune.(this will make more power then any other mod.)

His best bet is to do the Buschur Racing Stages.

Here is the link to the Buschur Racing Stages.

Thanks a ton guys. I'll definitely work on talking him into an aftermarket exhaust if it's gonna make such a big difference. I drove the car and was extremely impressed with it! I can't wait to get some more hp in it and then see how it feels.

The stock exhaust is a restriction for the car in stock form. It becomes even more of a restriction when adding other upgrades such as MBC, cams, intake, intercooler, hotside, manifold, etc. A performance exhaust should be the first upgrade you do. If you really want to keep a stealthy look, try some of Works products. They are exact matches for stock components. Get a high flow cat and find a quiet exhaust with a resonator. Or you could even get a loud exhaust that comes with a removable silencer. Put the silencer in when driving to work and such. Take it out when you want to rip! There are a few exhausts that are almost as quiet as stock. The cat has a lot to do with sound level as well.

Nobody mentioned a fuel pump in this thread yet... you'll probably need one and the way to go is a Walbro 255.

i have a catback, downpipe, ebc, walboro FP 255, crank pulley, l/u intercooler pipe and intake. i have gotten 319 whp/ 316 tq, 22 psi on a 91 octane (dynojet). i just recently installed an o2 housing, exhaust manifold and hfc. i am not even sure if i can get 340 whp without getting a retune on my current setup. your friend is going to need more mods in order to reach his goal. unless, he goes with all these set up (testpipe instead of hfc) plus cams on a higher octane, he will reach his goal plus a bit more hp and tq. good luck with the project.

dont turn up the boost! get a boost controller and set the boost to 20 psi same as stock but it just wont taper in higher rpms. If I was your friend I wouldn't let you touch my car. there are reliability mods that you must do first.
1-do some research
2-boost gauge
3-intake
4-turbo back exhaust
5-boost controller
6-ecu flash (most important) dont even drive till you get tuned
This will put you at about 315awhp and from there you could go a couple different directions depending on what you want to do i recomend cams, fuel pump, intercooler, injectors, o2 housing, that would put you around 350 to the wheels. good luck and check out buschur racing and ams they are the best when it comes to building evos
