well most of the time you need your cats, so keep em for smogging. exhaust wont make you fail as long as it aint loud (even if it is you will most likely be fine). finally cams can make you fail if for some reason your car is not tuned and you are running rich and dumping raw fuel. make sure the car is properly tuned and you have your cats and you should be fine. also the visual inspection must pass so make sure all your parts are either approved or hidden. and a CEL light = fail

Yup, and cops do too. At least in So. Cal. they do.
If you have anything that they (smog station people) might cause your car to run with bad emissions, e.i. an intake, a large turbo upgrade, or nitrous, that's grounds for them failing you.
I have talked to some smog guys and they say they do it because they would like to prevent wasting time on cars that probably won't pass. You see, they usually have other people waiting that will pass and they would rather not have to run your car simply to have you come back again.
What I do with my Honda is get one of those "You pass or you don't pay" coupons and for some reason, I always seem to pass. I always ask them before the test, "I'll pass right?" and they look to me and say something like "We'll make it pass." All for the love of money.j/k

Goodluck.

Heheheehehe Throw a ten-piece* to one of the guys at "drive clean" up here in Toronto and he'll "adjust" the smog testing machine to be more "accurate".

*note - A Ten-piece is a quantity of an controlled/banned substance**, when smoked it causes euphoria, munchies and all around good times.

**note - Not banned in Canada anymore YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

yeah most states have a visual inspection for the reasons stated but also for you. I mean you dont want to shell out $$ and find out you dont pass so they check visually. Cops check so they can fine you and or impound your car. Some aftermarket parts are certified for smog so you can keep em on when you go test. like aem cold air intakes and the like.

in va an inspection only costs 10.00, thats why i'm sayin go down there and have it done to see what they check because i can guarentee that VA is more strick about that **** then MD, because VA is **** retentive about everything, VERY conservitive.

There is no under the hood inspection in MD. Just a sniffer test and a visual for exhaust leaks.

In Texas, they just hook a scanner up to the OBDII port and it either says PASS or FAIL. I have no idea what it is looking for, no one has been able to tell me...

you should be fine.

the reason for the obd II is to check for codes like check engine light or car failure. texas is much more leniant than most states
