Question MIVEC Cam Gear Plug Cap broke

Hi All,

I was replacing the cams on my IX this afternoon and ran into a small problem.

The cap that covers the Intake Cam Gear hollow bolt was not releasing and since it is made out of aluminum.... got messed up while trying to remove it.. I may need to replace the plug cap along with the washer/gasket that goes with that cap.

Please refer to the attached image here and look for item number 14.

Question 1: Can I purchase the bolt and washer? Where?
Question 2: i searched various forums for the part number. If you have this part number, please post it here: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...=1#post4637187

We bought a motor from a wrecked 9. It had a bad cap on the MIVEC gear. We tried to get a replacement from Mitsu with no luck.

At that time, you have to buy a complete new MIVEC cam gear or find one used off a wrecked Evo.

I was hoping not to hear that! I just can not find it either.

I guess that I am running out of luck here! :-(

Thumbs up

Does that include the washer or just the bolt?

Thanks for the quick response!

That part number is just for the bolt. When I get off work this evening, I'll post up the PN# for the washer as well.

To remove the bolt without damaging it, you just need a 14mm hex.

we use a 14mm hex socket, with 1/2" drive...

so we can use 1/2" drive breaker bar to turn it nice and square...

make sure you torque them properly...

how the heck do you guys get that hex off so easily???? I hardly turned it with a 14mm hex socket and it stripped so easily. How can you guys put so much force on that thing without stripping it. I'm freakin stuck now. any help??????

I used a 1/2 inch * 24 inch handle with a 14mm hex socket.

I always use two people to snap that bolt. One that holds the hex in place and aligned with the bolt and the other one to apply force from the end of the handle.

You will need a 18 inch minimmum handle to be able to provide the amount of tq to snap it. Always replace the bolt and the o-ring/gasket after removal.

I only broke it the first time and never had a problem in about 8-10 times I have done it.

Good luck!

mine disintegrated. i got it off the first time, though it looked like it would strip. this was with an allen wrench. no breaker/socket, etc as i couldn't find one.
anyway, it went together fine but i was nervous.
the second time i did it, the head of the bolt BROKE. little aluminum (i thought it was magnesium, considering how brittle it was) pieces went everywhere. now there is a round hole where the f'ing hole was and i CAN NOT get the cap off. sweet, huh?

looks like i'm pulling the cams and taking it to the machine shop to do something drastic.
