Magnaflow Questions

I was looking to add a little more power to my car(stock besides drop in) and have been trying to read up on info about the Magnaflow Sport Catback Exhaust. I have read pages and pages of old posts. Even with all the posts i have read i feel there are still things i am curious about. I want to make sure that i am making a wise decision. I know Magnaflow has the taper where it connects to the stock cat and heard this is a downside to their exhaust. but on the other hand aren't they one of the most popular and performance driven companies out there? dont they have large funds invested in research and development? if this was such a big issue why would they design their system like this? is the taper the only part that isnt the full 3"? There are places selling this system for around 400.00. Is there a better system someone could recommend for the same price?
thanks for any help
adam

I have the Magnaflow Ti exhaust, which is no longer available. It too has that neckdown right after the Cat. I really should get a welder to eliminate the taper, I guess.

Anyway, the Buschur Exhausts are extremely light weight for a stainless system. They are available with a choice of mufflers and most important, to me at least, would be the fact that they are dyno proven to provide a sizeable power increase. No neckdown either.

This is something I've been kind of curious about. One of the few tests I've found is this one (granted it's from 2004). The thing I noticed is that under about 3500 rpm, the two exhausts that made the most power were the Borla and the Magnaflow Ti, which both neck down to less than 3". They didn't give up anything on the top end either, making at least as much peak power as any of the other top exhausts in the test. The exhausts that are 3" all the way through don't gain as much on the bottom end.

The only problem I really have with the test is that it's from 2004, so designs have changed since then, and other exhausts have come to market. It still seems to show that you don't need 3" all the way through, provided your car is somewhat similar to the one being tested (and I'd imagine that a lot more Evos out there are like the test car, than 450whp monsters).

Thoughts?
