Have you seen my 4th gear?
I think its strictly bad driving unless you have 450whp+ and you hot lap the crap out of your car. Power shifting (worst thing for any Evo tranny), thinking you know how to down-shift, etc. I'm not worried about my tranny and if it does blow I'll know that I caused it from hard driving.

Never been power shifted. Never been drag raced, launched it once way back on close to stock power.
It has been tracked however. That's not bad driving in my book.
Normal street driving with a tame evo, the 6spd is fine. Once you actually get some power and heat in the car is when the 6spd can become an issue.
Driving miss daisy types need not worry.

Take a 5 speed Evo and a 6 speed Evo with the same power output, the same fluids and run them both on a road course for an extended period of time with equally competent drivers. Which tranny will break first?
I await your answer.

All I can say is OOOOUUUUUUCHHHHH. I am glad I got a 5 speed Evo. I had a feeling that the 6 speed was a marketing gimmick from Mitsu to compete with the STI. When I found out that Aisin built the tranny, I had a feeling that it was a bad design. This same company built the QR25DE engine for Nissan to replace the SR20DE in the SE-R. That engine has been a disaster. My brother replaced his short block @ 36K on his 02 SE-R.
Trust me, I know the craptacular QR25DE all too well. I had a 2004 Spec-V with one of the last PTI gt3251r turbo kits to ship. 320whp on 10psi and water/meth. 2 months after I put the turbo on, I put it back to stock. Traction was a huge issue, but I knew that the QR wouldn't hav lasted long anyway.

I do autox and road race the Evo, but I've never been to the drag strip nor do I launch it hard on the street.
So, do you get some kind of core discount by sending in the 6 speed or are you stuck trying to sell a broken 6 speed?
Also, how often did you change your tranny fluid? Did you use the OEM fluid?

The fluid was changed @ 14k miles when I did the clutch. I used the BG that the dealer said they used on all the 6 speeds. Transmission went 6k miles later.
Here's some pics:

6spd owners, don't use BG.
