Playing with Racegas on the Dyno

Today i was hoping to play on the dyno with some racegas...

Before i start i would like to thank Jimmy and THE SHOP for the amazing service and hospitality they provide Every Time i visit... I like hanging out at The Shop so much that i have driven 4-5 times there in the last 10 days since i got the car...

I didnt actually finish the tune because my buddy was running late for work and the heat was too much in order to get some really good results...

Lets start...

Before i put some C16 in the tank i made a baseline pull on 93 to see how the car feels on such a hot day!

Also note that i changed my wheel size from the stock 235/45-17 to a 245/40-18, which i didn't know how would affect my pulls...

At 22psi spike on 93 octane the car pulled 301-303whp with a very flat 11 afr up to 6500 from where it became even richer to a very flat 10.8 up to 7500rpm where we stopped the pulls... (i owe you the dynosheets...forgot to print them out)...

Note: the car on pump gas feels indeed very fast and especially when i see 23-24 even 25psi of boost (with the help of my favourite additive of all times, Torco)... However my opinion is that my previous tuner chose to tune the car very conservatively and safe, however i think that it is TOO safe... high 10 afrs are for people who love WOT on the highway and try to see their Evos' top speed... For someone who does pulls in bursts low 11s even 11.5s are very safe too...

Without changing anything and the car on the dyno we pumped about 2 gallons of C16 in the tank... We let the car to idle for a while and as soon as we started to smell the racegas and see the tailpipe turning grey-white we started the pulls...

The car immediately started to run much richer... The 11s became 10.6-10.7s and the 10.8s became 10.5s....!!! OF course the power dropped a little bit, something that i saw first hand when i visited the track for the second time ever and the car with racegas and more boost was slower than on pump gas!!!

...Turning the boost up and giving some more timing and leaning the fuel map a little bit the car pulled a well respected 330-332whp at exactly 26psi of boost which unfortunately the car couldn't keep very well, the boost that is... At 4800rpm the car was already at 25psi and by 6600-6650rpm i was with less than 20psi of boost...

At this point let me note the fact that i have connected my mbc to the turbo nipple which looks like it is more sensitive in tempratures than the tapped bov method... probably i will change it and see...

Facts of the racegas "tune":

- the car never saw more than 26psi spike which is very low for such quality racegas!

- the timing of the car was almost like my street map where at the very top end the car doesn't exceed 17-18 degrees... i have seen maps with even 24 degrees on C16...

- my afrs were in the mid 11s up to 4800, almost 12 flat up to 6200 and then from 6200rpm and on a very flat 11.8... again i think it is very concervative for C16... i even tried a pull with afrs in the mid 12s where the car made even more power, however i considered these afrs not very safe... Maybe i am wrong and maybe thats what C16 likes, however i prefer to do baby steps as i am not a proffesional tuner...

- couldn't manage to see an intake temprature lower than 105 degrees...

- at the 26psi pulls i would see load values exceeding 300 thus making me think that it is time to rescale my maps...

Here's the dynosheet... not the best one but the most consistent and repeatable one...

Now if the power figures confuse you note this...

These are Dyno Dynamics numbers which i chose to run uncorrected.... show what it is

Since i have time on the dyno i even made the following test which learned me a lot!!!

i got my 330whp uncorrected pull...
I added 1.10 cf and the number became 363whp...
Then i changed it to 1.20 and the number became 396whp...

What did i learn by doing this experiment?

Someone can mess up with the numbers if he/she chooses to, either because he wants to "show dynojet" numbers, either because he/she wants to deceive the customer...

This particular dyno left uncorrected reads 20% less than a typical dynojet which has been verified numerous times, within +/- 5whp...

Finally note that i am not a tuner, i am not a shop owner, but i am a hobbyist who likes to learn and know how things operate and what they mean... I dont think that my tune is optimal as i dont even know the limits of racegas or what afrs or timing to target... I do baby steps to learn things, eventhought in the end i will request the services of a respectable Evo tuner to maximize the potential of my car...

Enough talking... Work and weather permitting i will try and find time to take the car to the track and see what i can achieve... i know that my car runs amazingly well since i am on a new shepherd tranny and clutch kit and i have made some more power...hopefully i will be able to see these 11s soon...

It sounds like a very fun experiment! Congrats on the numbers. I couldnt agree with you more about Jimmy and the shop, I have dealt with them three times and everytime, i am very pleased to say the least.

This is very similar to my C12 gas experiment. We have close to the same mods except I have gsc cams and you have the cossie. On my car the timing changes were very tame like yours. I also didn't get to finish my tune cause of the stock iC was not liking the high boost I really only got 3 pulls to tune the car but owell. I have another ic coming and will finish up again in a few weeks I am not going to post numbers or graph to start a pissing match. I was just relaying I had a results kind of in the same ballpark. I was on a mustang dyno instead of a DD. Keep us posted when you finish up the tune and times.

actually you should post your numbers...

Believe me...i am not one of those guys who tries to compare apples to oranges... different carm, different conditions, different dyno, different gas... just curious to see other setups on pump gas and then racegas...

I have to say though... the car on racegas feels scary driving it on the road...!!!
