11.5 @ 120 GT35r learning experience

Well, just got home from Island Dragway. Normal friday night street night. Very low turnout, Mark got like 15runs in his GVR4! I made 8 in the evo trying to tune in the gt35r at higher boost now that I got the ign missfire fixed.

Ignition: Stock evo8 coils suck a nut! I put old 1990 dsm coils and 1990 dsm igniter on the evo8, regapped the plugs wider from .020 to .028, and can still run 30psi of boost without missfires. Great how 13year older technology works better. Atleast it was a free mod.

Now with the ignition fixed, I can actually run racegas boost levels with this big turbo (GT3582 PTE bolt on, off my talon). I run 24psi on the street and have that tuned pretty well. AEM logger shows about 390-405whp on a good clean 3rd gear pull on the street on pumpgas.

Runs:
13.3 @ 113 2.22 for some reason, car crept through beams...waste.
11.78 @ 118.0 1.68 26.5psi ~390whp decent run, clean.
11.91 @ 119.5 1.69 27.5psi ~400whp slower shifting on 1-2
11.52 @ 120.7 1.64 29psi ~410whp lot of knock, clean driving
11.80 @ 120.4 1.75 29psi ~420whp less knock, spun tires in 1st-lifted
11.99 @ 119.7 1.77 30psi ~420whp less timing, spun tires..bogged in 2
11.86 @ 120.6 1.67 29psi ~410whp less timing, no knock, some spin
12.07 @ 117.6 1.78 24.5psi ~380whp no knock, lots of tire spin.

The car runs pretty solid 120mph now, but it honestly does not seem to pick up much mph going from street/pump boost level of 24psi up to 30psi on racegas. 2-2.5mph is crap for racegas and 5more psi. Im a bit dissapointed by the mph, I was hoping to see 123 or better. I had to pull significant timing as I raised boost setting to keep the ecu out of knock protection/ign pull. Something is choking the power.

FMIC: This was on the stock fmic, air temps on most runs started at 92-95* and were at 130 to 138* at the top of 4th. Im pretty hopefull that the BR race fmic will make a large power differance. Should be here in couple weeks.

Turbine housing: Im planning to swap out the precision DSM-bolt-on turbine housing for a Forced Performance turbine housing soon. Will be interesting to see if what "the internet" says is true. Most have the opinion that the pte turbine housing chokes off alot of power on a high boost/high power setup. Will find out soon.

yeah, It's gotta be either the FMIC core, or the turbine housing. After looking around, 120.7mph for a GT35R, on racegas, at 30psi is pretty weak. Many of the other guys with GT35R's are pushing 126-128mph. All of those guys are running a T3 turbine housing and have large FMIC. Will test each one seperatly and post the results.

I don't belive there was much in the tuning to be gained. AFR was in the mid 12's, ign timing was about as high as I could go without knock control kicking in.

My goal is to see a 10 and hit 130mph before the tracks close for winter in NJ. Still have the nitrous kit on the car, but Id really prefer to not have to use it. A GT35R should be able to knock off a 10 with ease once the parts combo is right.

Good work, i'm sure the FMIC is going to help alot. That stocker cannot support a gt35r

I bet you the DSM is on a Jenny Craig diet.

Keep working on it Nate. Seems like the exhaust housing could be choking off some power. Part of the mystery to be solved I guess. Good luck.

yes, it's the same turbo that was on my talon. I had to put the smaller turbine housing back on to make it fit with the BR cast manifold and o2 housing.

I have a Forced Performance turbine housing on the way (the one in the new BRgt35Rkit) to test. I fell the precision turbine housing is choking the exhaust flow. I had a hard time getting more than 128mph out of the talon in nice weather with this turbine housing. when I swapped to a tube header/T3 .82 turbine, I picked up 5mph in 100* humid weather.

Still ACT standard disk clutch. It's pretty worn by now, and will be replaced this winter. Might go with a twin disk, not really sure.

I wasn't at Island this friday, I had a "family meeting", as my wife and I are looking to buy a house.

hopefully Ill be there this friday testing something out.

The talon was about 2845 with full nitrous bottle, 5 gallon of fuel, 220lb driver, laptop, and 2 seats.

It was pretty light, but it was still a full body/glass car. only lightweight part that we bought was wheels and a fiberglass hood. The remainder of weight was just removing unneeded stuff...swaybars, wiring, underdash stuff, braces, ect.

Hard to say what it is. My car took a bit to get tweaked properly too. I ran 11.7-11.9 @ 118- 122 for the longest time when I switched to AEM and then all the sudden my friend tweaked it a bit (I think he added timing) (1-2 degrees) and then I pulled of an 11.6 @ 124, 11.5 @124 and 11.3 @ 125 with 30psi. This is on stock ignition too (.24 gap).

AEM EMS. I haven't used a haltech since like 2001 when the E6S was "new and cutting edge"
