stock evo bad idle problems

driving home 2 nights ago i was going about 25 mph put car in neutral and car just died on me. i was able to restart car but had to keep pushing down on accelerator to get rpm up above 1.
replaced battery, alternator is fine, air filter fine, checked for leaks (none i believe and have been told by 2 different mechanics).
when starting the car and letting the engine idle the rpm is usually around .5 and engine shakes really bad then drops to zero and the car shuts down (about 3-10 seconds upon starting).
i can drive the car but when turning on the ignition i keep my foot on the accelerator to keep the rpm above 1 then i can switch gears and drive as i normally do..when breaking i throw in neutral and leave my foot on the accelerator..
now i know it's really bad for my clutch..but does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? a mechanic friend has told me it may be that the throttle body is clogged but im wondering if it could be something else?
60500 miles, 2003 evo 8
thanks much

Boost leak, coil going bad, or bad MAF. What type intake do you have? Clean the MAF, see if it came unplugged. Dump the 2 "mechanics". LOL.

Check for any vacuum lines leak around the intake manifold. Also(a must) check the BOV to air intake recirculating hose, that will definately make your iddle like hell.

Good luck

Sounds like an extreme case....but it may be the seals on your throttle body shaft. My car idled very rough (never died though) and the seals were very bad. Do a quick check by misting around the tb with a spray bottle. Idle will surge if you've got a leak there.

^ Are u tuned for a intake? Open air intakes are known to cause idle issues w/o a tune.

An aftermarket intake pipe will cause a poor idle unless its tuned for it.

Well it ran fine for a few days with the new ETS inake.

When i was installing the intake i looked at the MAF and it had like a "Gooey" surface with dirt. I didnt try cleaning it because i didnt have any MAF cleaner readily available, and your not suppose to wipe it or touch it. Thats why im thinking its my MAF. Im gonna clean it tomorrow and see if that works. If cleaning it doesnt work im gonna get new plugs and coilpacks.

Ill keep you guys updated so we can know a fix for this problem.

Well i cleaned my MAF... no difference.

A buddy took a look at my ROM... bingo problem was my tune. The maps werent scaled good under 100 load, which = sorry drivability.
