I wouldn't exceed 21psi without starting to worry. I believe 25-26 is max for that turbo and you may start breaking stock internals at that point.

21psi is pretty much the max with good gas on a cool day.. on a real hot day I'd back it off a little just to reduce the risk of detonation..

Anything higher is just blowing hot air with a stock turbo and valve train..

I wouldn't turn it over 19psi without a datalogger to make sure that the engine is not knocking. On race gas, turn it up higher.

Depends on the octane gas your running,if 91 keep it 19 or less psi.

You can make a lot of power with 19psi boost pressure. I guess the pre-occupation carries over from our DSM's. The 1G's came with 14psi or so and with proper supporting mods you could safely turn it up to 19 or 20 with a 16g on 93 octane pump gas. And that would yield great gains in HP. (plus fuel cut! ).

The EVO comes out of the box with most of the supporting mods and boost is probably the last thing you need to be tinkering with. The greatest gains are to be had from an AFC or piggy back of your choice and a small pressure drop exhaust. That combo will get you another 30 to 50hp. Add a set of HKS cams, throw in a timing map and you now have netted an additional 50 to 80hp. Most folks are going to be happy with 350bhp; at least I will and all on pump gas at 19psi.

Don't get too excited.
I used to run 1.4 bar on my heavily modified WRX with 93 octane all day long. This was with a large turbo and standalone, fuel pump, injectors, rails, lines, regulator, intercooler etc etc. 11.0:1.
I will say that 19 is enough until you are getting an intercooler, etc. Any more is not a good idea. It isn't effective. The turbo, however, will supposedly make power at higher boost levels with all the supporting mods. I have yet to see it myself, though. I run 20 max with IC and piping, fuel pump, engine management, intake, fuel press regulator, exhaust, etc.

mikshan,

Sorry but 1.5 bar is not equal to 30psi. Its more like 21.76psi. I do believe the evo can stand that much. Caludius told me that with some supporting mods the evo could hold a max of 1.6bar, or 23.2psi.

So how much boost if you add

a larger intercooler, 780cc injectors, head studs, and fuel pump, along with lower ic piping? oh yeah, 272 in/ex cams too.

Just to let you know 1 bar = approx. 14.5 psi
