Trying to save on MPG help
Trying to save on MPG help
Hey guys I'm just trying to get opinions from you all about doing up grades to my Evo 8 to make it more Fuel efficient. Right now it's a major gas hog I feel like I'm only getting 13 MPG in the city. Any suggestions on what upgrades to do?
get a bike!!!!!
try freeing up factory restrictions. keep it outa boost and most importantly of all.. don't be a lead foot. why i used to do is have a boost controller so i could turn the boost down for daily driving. car is not as fast.. but less speed=less gas. just a suggestion

here si alist of "freeing" mods
1. k&n filter
2. throttle body upgrade
3. port and polish head/ runner etc
4. upgrade down pipe and exhoust (however i would say try to find another variable muffler as this adds to the low end by theory)
5. any other nic nack that will smooth power flow (no hurricane or any other bolt like that)
6. for kicks run the ac to the turbo to get colder air for better gas mileage
hope that helps... last two are just for fun if you have time and nothing better to do

Do you do most of your driving at the track?? You might try to alter you driving style (I know, nobody likes to hear that, including me).... If all else fails, you might want to consider trading to a more economical vehicle

EMANAGE.... lean it out...evos come butt rich stock...lean it out.... if not than safcII or any other fuel management... if uwant better miles per gallons of fuel.... best thing to do is give the car less fuel... duh =P
Tires and tire pressure is pretty important too. Harder tires that maintain their roundness better as the tire rolls give better mpg of course trade off is horrible grip compared to the softer ones that mold to the pavement for more grip.

If you are hard enough on the throttle driving around town that using an AFC DOES affect your milage, then here is a clue...stop flooring the gas!
The amount of time you spend in open loop mode should be tiny compared to the amount of time you spend in closed loop.Freeing up the exhaust and adding an air filter tends to help highway milage, but hurt city milage, since the turbo will now spool up faster.
My car gets 31mpg on the highway, but just 18mpg in the city. Stock I would get around 21mpg city and 26mpg highway.

That won't do anything for your milage. An AFC or emanage only affects open loop operation. When you are at steady cruise, the engine computer uses the O2 sensor as feedback for how long to fire the injectors (closed loop). It already runs pretty lean in closed loop mode. Since the ECU uses feedback, an AFC or emanage would not affect that feedback, and the ECU will tune cruise fuel around your adjustments. You will end up right back where you started.

You are so right Shape, after I installed my new 3" catback, my in-town mpg dropped a good bit... I have not had a chance to check the highway mpg yet, let's see how it works out... I still think that mpg is almost always completely dependent on driver's skill, smoothness and a light touch on the loud pedal
Unfortunately for me, I've got a heavy foot and it sure shows at the gas pump
I also think that dicking around with the fuel via e-manage or SAFC, is not the answer for this problem. Leaning out the car will only save fuel during open loop and that should not be where one drives all the time

The first thing that you have to learn is that your gas pedal is not just an on-off switch. ie...you have to alter your driving style. Do not let the turbo spool up upon normal acceleration. Every start from stop is not the beginning of a 1/4 mile race. Don't run the rpm's up high before engaging the clutch. Just give it enough so that the engine doesn't stall.
If you do it correctly, you should easily get 20mpg in city like driving.

180 miles now and only a quarter tank of gas left. Its only been 3 days and I will have to fill her up later tonight =[ Did anyone win the powerball? Maybe Ill go to indiana and fillher up and buy me a few tickets. If I win, I'll buy everyone some goodies for their cars =]
