I have an exedy triple disc clutch in the car and went to the track tuesday. On the first launch, I tried to slip it, but it almost felt like a dump of the clutch and i think I broke my transfer case. I don't hear any whining noise, but when I drive it and it gets up to speed, I hear a loud "clunking" noise. Is this the transfer case or could it be something in the transmission? It's an 03, so no acd. The trans shifts like butter, so I'm guessing it's the transfer case. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.

Drive the car in a parking lot at very slow speeds with windows down in a figure 8 and see if the noise gets worse and try to identify if noise is from front, back left side, right side or where transfer case is located..If it does it is more than likely broken spider gears but do not drive it much as it will do more damage than good.

Its probably some type of internal part inside the transmission, from what i hear usally when you crack the case fluid will leak insanly and u hear the whining noise.

The case isn't cracked and I tried driving it again today, but only heard the sound once or twice. It sounds like it's coming from the middle of the car. If the trans was broken, would I be able to shift well? The trans still shifts like butter......

It's a clunking noise, no whining.....If the spider gears were broke, what kind of sound would it make?

As simple as this sounds,By looking .Look where the axle goes into the hub,can also remove wheels and see if threaded part of axle that has the big nut/cotter pin on it is falling out of hub on outside.

I will look this weekend. If one of the axles was broken, would it make a clunking noise sometimes or all the time? I only got the clunking noise randomly today driving it around the block trying to figure out what it was. Everyone says with a broken transfer case, you hear a loud whine. I don't hear that. The trans shifts smoothly still too. It would be great if it was just an axle....

if you snapped the internal parts of the transfer case youd know immediately becuase it would sound horrific at any speed. If you damage the gearing they tend to howl.

You hear clunking which almost makes me want to point at motor mounts in a typical car but with an evo I just don't know. The motor and tranny mounts are pretty easy to visually inspect so I'd just put that only your list to visually go over when you put the car on some jacks.

Simple test to see if your transfer case is broken is to jack the front of your car up and spin your front wheels by hand. If your wheel don't do the complete 360 freely and it gets stuck at one point of the turning, then your diff is broken. It happened to me and thanks to Shep Stage 2 transfer case, I'm a happier person now .

you broke a tooth off spider gear. the clunk you here is that tooth being skipped. it will get worse very quickly.
