Oil inside intake pipe
Oil inside intake pipe
Just boght another evo and I am going through the process of a deep clensing, and trying to find all the ghosts in the car. I noticed today when I took the intake pipe and factory filter setup off, there was thick oil sludge inside the pipe even blocking some of the MAF honeycomb.
The turbo has no shaft play, no smoke, 31k on the car, and it drives fine. Could compressor surge cause this? I noticed that the blow off valve in my white car counds way different than the one on my yellow car. If it is a faulty BOV, could this be a possibility?
Thanks for any input as it is greatly appreciated.

the oil in the intake is just blow by coming out of the head of the engine (hose runs from the head to the intake). Thats why a ton of people get a oil catch can that catches the oil before the intake.
Yeah, that will just kind of build up over time. That oil comes from the valve cover and I don't think that there is any type of valve to regulate it since the PCV vents from the opposite corner of the valve cover.
Clean the pipe and monitor the buildup. I checked mine at about 9k and it may have accumulated 1/4 teaspoon of oil in the intake pipe. If you find a significant amount of fresh oil after cleaning then you need to look further. The PCV would be a likely candidate ... if it's not functioning properly then the pressure will find another way out and that would likely be through that vent and in to the intake.

ahhh no
Thanks for the help guys. The car has 31k on the clock and i pulled the intake pipe off and jesus....I used a few cans of brake parts cleaner to get every ounce of oil out. i'll find a catch can.

don't just get "a can" look into this 1 the guy that makes them is a member and the unit is made evo specific.

sure you're right
it's a dual can system that works. you can spend less for one that does nothing and save money I guess. read about all the cans out there that collect nothing after being installed for years.

As far as the Blow off valve, I tried a search, but with an exhaust make the BOV louder or sound different? I know I have a factory BOV but it is much louder than in the one in my stock car. Were the MR BOV's designed differently?
The MR BOV (i want to say) holds PSI a little better (but not much) the difference between the two is that it sounds like one of your vehicles already has a intake on it where as the other does not.
if it holds boost than its fine, I would check for boost leak tho, umm and spray the honeycomb with some carb cleaner, for better idle, who knows maybe previous user was VTA venting to atmosphere... (catch can is a +1) as you know MR BOV is made out of aluminum not plastic so it holds boost better, for longer run and it can hold 24psi n/p soundwise? with k&n cone they sound the same.

Just cap off the intake and run a longer line down from the valve cover to the bottom of the car pointing to the ground and then rubber band a rag around the end of the line and call it a day......
