Question defogger turns on the a/c????

something i've noticed (especially on this long trip i just took over the 4th of july weekend) is that when i have the defogging on (both regular and with the air to the ground combo) it seems the A/C goes on!!! it's noticably colder compared to the other settings!!

the A/C button doesn't turn on though, but i know that it's on! maybe just slightly, but it's definitely on!..

i wonder if this is just my car!..

i can understand why it would turn on though as a practical matter when your windows fog... cus i know i've turned on my A/C in the past in other cars to help get rid of fog sometimes...

i also always get water (i checked to make sure it was just water) dripping under my car no matter if i have the A/C on or just the defogging..

if your vent is switched to a/c it won't come on but if you change the selector to vents it will

Some manufacturers do this because A) defogging works better with the A/C on because it dehumidifies. B) It causes the compressor to cycle in the winter time, which is better for the compressor then not having it run for months at a time. This is very common on GM vehicles and some others. Never noticed it on the Evo but never really use the defogger much.

It made no sense to me either.
I may have to quote it in my signature.

hah! kewl! but now i know NOT to have it on defogging when i'm at the track (since the AC robs power)...

could you test yours out just to see if i'm not nuts?!.. i'd appreciate it!

thanks!

Yeah I'll try it tomorrow. It doesn't matter though cause the ECU turns it off at wide open throttle. Some cars turn it off at 50% or above. I still wouldn't turn it on though. Just FYI...

I just noticed the same thing tonight as I was driving home in the rain. The A/C light doesn't come on, but it definitely gets cooler and clears the window up quick = compressor on.

Not that it means much, but the same deal happens with my OZ. Like that guy said, the dehumidified air from the AC defogs the windows better.

no what i was saying is if you put on your defroster the a/c light won't come on correct? when you you put your directional "dialer" as you put it, to either the floor or vents it will come on.... i noticed this a while ago and was like wtf why isn't my a/c coming on...then i moved the switch from defrost to vent, and hit it and it came on...

It says right in the owners manual for the oz that the a/c comes on when you select either window defroster setting. That is awesome that the ecu turnes the a/c off at WOT.

This happens on most cars. The defogger accomplishes it's job mostly by decreasing humidity in the air....and thats what air conditioners do too.

And you wouldn't have to worry about using it on track. the AC compressor disengages at WOT.

SC~

Same here no A/C light but defogger bolws cold as hell. I strongly believe they're all like that from factory.

Swede - its the same way in the WRX's. They actually have a mod you can do to disable this, Im hoping someone figures it out for the EVO as well....

Its rainy and muggy here in Seattle, so sometimes i need to turn on the defroster, but when i do, i can definately feel the ac pulley kick in, and my power deminishing..

btw your bomb
