I was told by a tuner that you want to run normal oil in the evo for the break in period. Is this true? Anyone else heard of this? I am sticking with what comes in it, I only have 100 miles but I will change if it will help the care break in.

Shiv said they have seen 10whp increased on EVOs that have used dino oil for the first thousand miles or so. (actually i think he said 5000) He also said they DONT eat oil. Tons of people on this board have oil drinkers, mine luckily eats about a 1/6 of a quart every 2000 miles, which is ok i guess...

If I were to do it over again, i would have put dino in. Who needs to know anyway?

I will be going with non-synth oil tonight. I liked my nsx they had a special oil in the car and said do not change it for like 700 miles. It was break in oil or something like that

just hope ( ) isnt watching this post! lol

Let us know how it goes!!!

On my WRX i did this, only I used Amsoil's New car forumula. Which is a syn/dino blend. Worked REALLY well as my WRX never ate a DROP of oil. That thing was tight as a drum...

sorry the new car formula = Amsoil 7500XL 10w30 or 5w30 depending on how cold it is where you are.

I changed mine at 3k and it was black.I would bet that there was a breakin additive in there from the factory.

Don't you have to be careful with turbos and regular oil due to heat?

I have heard from a few engine builders that (and this has been discussed before) the rings won't seat properly with the synthetic. ANd, if this is true, it would seem to explain the oil drinking problem. I personally think I am going to drop the oil the minute I get the car (in 04), put regular Mobil in, and go from there.

I've been told that the cars are shipped with a "break-in" additive in the oil to help seat the rings and wear in the cams.... I dunno if thats actually true though. I do know that your driving habits will have a huge effect on how strong the engine runs and how the parts seat..

mine only has 1800 miles and it's very black. this has concerned me about the 10W-30. I have 2 other non-turbo cars that'll run hard a full 3000 miles on 10W-30 Synpower and be as clear as the day I put it in. The 30 is made to go the longer intervals, mitsu recommends 5000, but I'll be going with a 0W-40. I'll do the 3000 mile change. The 40 will give better protection and shouldn't be as broken down (black) as the 30. Of course the 40 doesn't have the long term stability like the 30 so I wouldn't go past 3000 miles for an oil change.

sorry stvbrea, i know it's been beat to death...but...

did my standard work up breakin for the first 3K, now at 4K and my EVO used a total of 1/4 qt ( it was 1/4 qt over full at PDI ).

From 3 - 4 K I have been driving the car as it was meant to be prolly hit dead redline 10 times and it has not used a drop past the 1/4 qt over fill and the oil looks used but not black a nice caramel color on a paper towel.

Just my experience

Just checked my stick and @ 2500 she has not used a drop, the color is about what I've seen at this mileage in all of the cars i've owned (all went over 100K). This car had 509 on it when I took delivery. Every one in the dealership had taken her out and let her rip. I have not taken it easy on her either since I figured any damage fron an improper break-in was already done. I have driven the car to red line at wot most every time I take her out and have played around at 120 or so a few times. I realilze this is anecdotal but we are kind of pioneers with this car so every experience has at least some merit. These cars are just too much fun.
