Beware Of Garbage Gasoline
I think we're down to about 146 refineries for the entire country. Sounds like a lot but it's been in heavy decline since the 1970's and it's one of the reasons gas prices are so high. With that said, gas is gas and refineries produce the basic gas package for a multiple number of brands. It's all the same basic crap and is refined the same way. The additive packages are what change from brand to brand. It's definitely possible to get sub-standard gas, most likely from either contamination or the wrong octane rating. But until you get into the "exotics", there's not much difference between brands, again except for the additive packages which are there for lubrication and detergent purposes. Everything else for the basic gas "package" is heavily regulated by the Feds.
That gas DOES suck. On my trip back from Michigan to PA there was simply no choice. Had to get gas at the Valero. :bah:
Luckily it was all purged at zero boost, on a constant cruise the whole way thru. Got home, and back to my Sunoco 93. And the car felt alot better.
I got seriously 18mpg cruising on that valero junk.
And that was parking the nose of the evo up the *** end of a Monte SS for about 200 miles.

the goverment regulations on additives are so lax & outdated that the gas companies & major auto manufacturers got together & created thier own standard, granted this relates to deposit control additives more so than octane or high performance, but it gives you an idea of who's trying to make a good fuel & who is just out to make a buck
im not shure about other parts of the country. but here in socal, the tanker trucks all carry regular 87 octane & it is not until it is dipsensed into the underground tank at the station that the octane additives are put into the fuel. also, there are only two underground tanks, 87 & 91. when you select mid grade it dispenses a mixed amount of 87 & 91 octane. each station has thier own "blend" of additives, some increase motor octane more, others increase research octane more. if your tuning your car on the edge, it is best t pick a gas that works good for you & stick with it. (R+M)/2 you can increase the R or the M & still arrive at the same octtane rating, but one gas will be more suited for high load & the other for low load.

Needless to say I've used Shell ever sense.
Yes, George's car and I thought you and Steve DID get gas there, remember?
Also, I am fairly certain Valero fuel is produced in South America, I know that's where the company itself is from.

That's got to be a regional problem or perhaps the store was croocked and bribed the trucker to fill the 93 bladder 91 to make several hundred dollars. I think there's a quality standard the fuel needs to meet before it's release.
The local Valero station where I live resulted in fewer knock counts compared to most other stations back when the car was knock limited. Citco was the worse.
Not sure were valero is shiped from but the refinery is in Aruba.

DB,,,, and AL dyniflash,,, what is the gasoline that you guys have seen the best gains from and that has been the easiest to tune on,, shell or sunnoco or chevron ??
this will prob help every one with their dbouts on what gas to get.

wawa gas stations have 92 octane "premium" so be very careful. Also i am not sure if its true or not, but a gas station owner told me when tankers come to fill the tanks with new gas, they stir up all the stuff on the bottom. Again, not sure if there is any truth to it, but just throwing that out there to see if anyone else heard the same thing...
