Help EVO ticking like crazy!! PLS Help

Hey Guys,

Not sure what this crazy ticking noise is, I thought I busted a rod at first.. I was flooring the car in 3rd from a low rpm then it Backfired.. and now I have an awful ticking noise.. the car runs fine.. Didnt boost it again.. but drives totally normal doesnt miss a beat..

I think it is a cam lifter?? or something like that.. No idea Haven't open my engine past the spark plugs..

Here is what it is doing it is awful.. You can barely hear it in the car thought.. the higher the rpm tends to make it a little louder.....

I would pull the valve cover and take a look it should be pretty obvious what it is.

this sound occurs when the lifters aren't bled when doing a cam install.

Thanks Guys.. I just looked under the valve cover and everything is in place.. I wonder if I can just bleed the lifters?(that is what I think it is too) Or I will need new ones?

I'm working on one right now at the shop. This EVO had a recent cam install at another shop. The HLAs are removeable without taking the cams out with a special tool or carefully with a medium prybar/screw driver. Soak the HLA in clean fresh oil. Push the plunger of the HLA up and down while submerged in oil. Reinstall the HLA and let them rest for 20 to 30 minutes before starting. I'll post some pics when I go back together.

Sound like my head after Pruven Performance did the work they said it was normal , but when the car got to AMS that ticking sound was 8 bent valves and a warped head.

empty lifter = loud ticking noise that will make you crazy.
pumped up lifter = bent valves

If you follow this procedure listed you should do it in solvent, allow it to soak, and purge the lifter completely before installing as a cleaning procedure.

A lifter with no oil will make noise. A lifter too full of trapped oil will kill a valve on startup.

Update on 06 EVO ticking. Upon teardown I found this.

Just look at the oil feed hole size not to mention the fact that its .068" shorter in length.
I am not the type to flame another tech/shop, but this takes the cake. An aftermarket shop in Orlando did this. I'll post a few more pics when I go back together. Sorta hard to hold a camera when using both hands covered with oil.

There is an in car bleeding proceedure as well that I read in the shop manual. Basically slowly reving to 3k hold for 10 sec and repeat

If not your stuck soaking them and pushing the plunger in and out

I had already tried the in car bleed procedure for about 5 minutes. I figured a closer look was needed. The out of car cleaning procedure in the service manual/M.E.D.I.C. actually says to use diesel fuel and a nylon bristle brush.

since there are soooo many threads about strange ticking noises I will posting this link in everyone. hopefully we can figure out if anyone/everyone is having the same or different noise coming from their car.

On a side note. after the car is warm it will sometimes go away.
