help: loud huming noise

Their is a loud humming type noise comming from behind the driver side break on my car (03 evo, 40k miles). It has never made this noise since I've owned the car, but just started making it yesterday when I got to denver from NM. I don't know what it is, it seems to get louder and louder as the car stays on longer. I don't know if something got damaged on the drive up or if it was hot or something (temps were normal the whole time) but all help would be appreciated as I'm 400 miles from home, haha. Thanks in advance guys.

I can't post a sound clip, didn't bring anything with me to do that. Sorry. I can say its like a higher pitched sound, kind of sounds like a fan sound of sort. With the windows down its heard pretty loud, about the same sound level as my exhaust. I have never heard anything like it before from my other evo or from my friends evos.

Sounds like it may be your transfercase. Download the vids on my thread I made a while back and use quicktime to view the files. Tell me if it sounds like that.

it would help to list your mods. Aftermarket fuel pumps tend to make some humming noise.

If its coming from a certain wheel on the car and louder when you open the windows my guess would be that you have wheel bearings(entire hud assmebly) going out. It will get louder the longer you are driving cause the bearings heat up.

Jack up the wheel that seems to be the issue and shake the wheel it might have a bit of play if it is the problem.

That sounds like the problem. On closer inspection it's only comming from the driver side rear tire. It gets louder the more i drive it, and it doesn't make any noise when i first drive the car. I think this is the problem, I'm going to go jack up the car right right now and try shaking the wheel like you said.

If this is the problem, What should I do? and can i drive the car back the 400 miles? Or should I try and get it fixed in the next day that i'm here in Denver? This sucks, i just bought the car 3 weeks ago

thanks for all the help guys!

If it is the wheel bearing, thats something you want to get fixed right away..... Not to scare you or anyhting, but one of buddies had a roll over in his car cause the wheel bearing locked up..... he drove an s2000...... If it is bad it will have play up/down, and side to side.
