I can hear whining somehwere in my engine....could it be TC?

It started yesterday...All in all it whined less than 20 times since yesterday. I've searched looks like its my TC!
It whines on 1st-2nd gear...Can somebody tell me why? what's the cause? Is this critical?
How long should I wait to repair it? Right now i'm broke
What are the do's and don'ts to make it last? I recently change my fluid to Redline MT90 5k miles ago...Could it be the reason?

Or is there any parts that will whine besides the TC?

OEM fluids are recommended, but if it only whines in first and second gear that's normal. TC whine gets louder and louder as speed increases. I read somewhere that the stock first and second gears are straight cut gears.

Please tell me that you didn't use MT90 in the transfer case!!!! That's for the transmission! You need to use a gear oil for the TC.

no the whine comes in at highway speeds and u can barley hear your radio at normal volume. Mine only whines at the speeds of 60-65mph then again a lil around 80...i can be in 4th, 5th or coasting and it will make the noise...if im in decel while in gear its quite. Ive put about 12k on the car since this started, launched at least 6-10 times pulling 1.6 60fts and hasnt got any worse so guess ill live with it, im not putting out 3-3.5k to get a new rebulit one from Shep or TRE until the thing hits the pavement. Hoping someone comes out with a replacement ring and pinion before that happens so i dont have a buy a whole new TC but we shall see.

It whines at low speed(below 3k rpm) i thought it was somewhere in the cam gear so took off the cam gear cover last night.
I will switch back to Diaqueen on Friday. Hopefuly it will stop whining or perhaps last a little longer!
Can I stil race the car?(drag race)

In an effort to save myself writing time I'm reporting information from an old thread I replied to.

A major excitation source for gear whine is something called "transmission error" which has to due with the non-conjugate motion transfer of the gears. Superimposed on top of the gear's mean rotation speed are small higher frequency oscillations attributed with the deflection of the teeth, assembly errors and gear tooth profile imperfections.

These small oscillations (due to the motion transfer error) create dynamic forces and these forces are then transfered to the shaft, bearings and then to the housing. The housing vibrates and acts like a speaker - the customer then hears gear whine.

Modifications can be made to gear teeth to try and minimize transmission error. However, minimizing transmission error usually only happens at a small range of loads. Meaning, you would still have 'large' transmission errors at other loads. Automobile manufactures can have a tough time minimizing transmission error since the transmission gears see a wide variety of loading (hard acceleration vs. cruising at legal highway speeds). Other gearbox manufactures have it easy since their gearboxes may only operate at one load (an industrial situation for example). Also, be aware that the modifications to the gear teeth that are used to minimize transmission error are on the micro-inch level! A micro-inch is 0.000001 inches!

Most gear whine issues in automobiles occur at light loads. Unless the whine is truly a dynamics problem, the whine does not indicate that your transmission is going to fail.

Transmission error can not be totally eliminated, it can only be minimized (again typically only at a small range of loads). Therefore, gear whine exists but the degree of the whine is what customers usually complain about. Gear whine is probably more acceptable in a $10k car vs. a $50k car. If you really want to hear some gear whine, drive your car in REVERSE!!!! Since most people do not drive in REVERSE all of the time, the manufactures save money by not modifying the tooth profiles of these gears.

Hope that helps...

His site goes off and on. However, TRE doesn't offer t-case rebuilds right now, only new t-cases

somebody said it may not be my TC...its the turbo!?!?

I had the same symptoms. It was my turbo. can you be more specific on your symptoms?

from what i understand TC while sounds through all gears and goes with the sound of your rev.

Turbo whine is louder for some reason in the first 2 gears and gets louder as it gets worse in the rest of the gears.

I replaced my turbo for under $300 w/ a used VIII. You can find IX turbos for $450-600 used (havent checked in a while though.)

good luck and hope its not your TC.

I would change the fluids back to diaqueen Place oil into a clear plastic bowl check for shavings. Do the back why your at it as well. Drive it around see what happens. But the guy above is right there is a small whine in first and 2nd. Even when you upgrade to a lsd like my ralliart does the same but i change the fluids in that every 3 weeks.

If it where to give i would say give this a try.

http://www.sheptrans.com/catalog.php...%20TCASE&id=14

stage 1 tc build

We had this on my budy's shop car didnt last long but then on the other hand the car had over 600whp. I think he lauched it maybe 10 times or a lil more and it broke.

Good luck...

you need to drain that fluid and put gear oil in as stated above. the redline fluid you used is for the tranny.

It usualy does from a dead stop then 1st gear below or around 3k rpm...I can also hear something when i accelerate kinda rattling noise or some kinda fan that needs oil... also this occurs at low rpm maybe blow 4k rpm.
