toluene
I'm reading that stoich for toluene is ~13.5:1. Since the O2 sensor essentially reads lambda and not actual AFR, the shift in stoich would cause the sensor to read high. Basically, I'm running a higher lambda value with the same IPW since stoich dropped with the toluene mix.
how well does the toluene mix with the gas though. you put a gallon or 2 in the empty tank and fill it up with gas. But how well does it mix. during a wot would some of the mixture be 93 octane while other times its 96. So if you tune for 96 octane and you get that sudden 93 fuel, that could potentially get ya in trouble right.
I don't think there is any trouble mixing toluene with gas. It's my understanding that toluene is used at refineries to increase the octane of fuel. Also, most octane boosters you purchase are a mix of toluene and xylene (along with a few other components).
^ Exactly.
But bypassing the little bottle in favor of pouring 3 gallons of it in... is when it really works. Thing is, I don't normally pay anything for it. So IDC. This stuff is best used as TB mentioned. As a buffer for when you are really going to go beat the daylights out of the car. Track, hot hot hot days, autox. Etc. I've always left my current safe tune on the car and just hiked the boost. For simplicities sake. The one time we sat down and really went for broke on it. Retuning completely, is when we got what I posted.
Its just another card in your car guy wallet. I'm not putting it on a platter, but don't count it out either. Plus its sensor safe. No wiping out o2's on it. And your car will actually run smoother. You'd be surprised, in small quantities it will increase driveability enough to a worthy additive.
This isn't the end all be all additive / octane supplement. But... it 100% works.
It does mix well. Especially if dumped in the tank first and then fill up ON it. To help stir the pot so to speak. It takes a little bit to thoroghly mix well. But its easy to know when your at the perfect mix point. Listen to your idle. It will gradually clean out. When it goes still as glass. Feel free to romp on it, or turn up the boost. A lil' first hand with the stuff, and you'll know exactly what I mean.

that's exactly it ... 16 oz of toluene will do very little for the car. If you're not running more than a 10% mix or so, I would not recommend re-tuning for it or even touching the boost.
However, adding a gallon or so then filling up would give a little buffer for a track day or auto-x event. That's my plan.
