To see if your turbo is messed up, just pull the intake off and check the shaft play inwards and outwards, and sided to side. There should be minamial amount of shaft play. If you spin the impellor and it hits the housing, time for a new turbo. But in your case i higly doubt its the turbo. Even with a bad seal in the turbo you would not be using up that much oil. And same goes for valve stems. You said you were losing lots of power in between each dyno pull. I would say that its def your rings. Heres what you do.

1. check shaft play on turbo
2. If turbo is ok, do a compression test
3. Do a leak down test.

With those tests, you should be able to find out where all your oil is going, and why you are losing so much power after each pull. Good luck.

well, on the dyno, we checked compression...compression turned out good. around 150 for each. but that was when the engine was warm and that is only a static test. when boost hits, u cant really tell how the rings are acting. i will check the turbo though....as u said, i also highly doubt its the turbo but i was just wondering what all the possible conditions could be

A leak down test, needs to be done then. Thats the real way to find out. Has your car knocked real hard or det latly. I know you cant always tell, but i am just fishing for an answer here.

Although I would be also shocked to see it being a ring. Because your built motor. But weirder things have happened.
LEAK DOWN TEST TIME!!

well, my motor isn't built...my signature is just a list of things i already have and am going to put in because my motor is doomed. so i am just fishing for a certain cause of my motor going out.

my motor hasnt knocked real hard, but on the dyno, it made real good power with no knocks at all...then it started knocking and knocking some more until i lost a good amount of power at the end of the tune. this was at the same amount of boost the whole time and when it started knocking...which wasn't really hard....it was the 3rd run on the dyno, with the same fueling and timing maps.

if you want to find out if your turbo is bad or not it's pretty simple. just leave the cookie jar next to it, then leave the room. if there are cookies missing when you get back, then your turbo has been very very bad. if you are quiet enough sneaking back into the room, you may even be able to catch the turbo red handed. good luck with that.

lol....

damn dude did you check the shaft play yet? it takes 10 mins to remove a clamp and figure that out....

I agree its probably a seal... if your seeing blue smoke on an evo it prolly has something to do with the turbo....
your welcome to pm me if you need and illl pm you back my number while your checking it out if you need a better description on a bad turbo.

I dont think its an engine issue due to the whining you claimed and the oil consumption. If it was motor wise you probably wouldve figured it out by now and seem some compression issues by now.

one thing though with sticking your finger in the turbo to check shaft play, my experiences with Mitsubishi turbos, even brand new there is a little play or movement so not sure what the tolerance is on the turbo, if you take off your intercooler piping and see alof of oil sitting in your intercooler, then its a seal most likely

oh, i'm sorry...i believe i said there is NO whining noise. the turbo just sounds like it does brand new. but yes, it is taking a quart a week.

does not sound like you turbo, you are not going to find out what it is until you do a leak down test and check your turbo.....so go do that

I will tell you from experience right now as my turbo recently blew. It started out as some smoking between shifts giving me the impression that it was a valve guide or valve guide seal. The other day, I applied a little boost and the turbo finally made a loud howling noise. Now when the turbo spools, it sounds like a jet fighter engine. Kinda cool if you ask me. Its sounds like you have some top secret engine modification under the hood. = )
After I took the intake pipe off, the blades were scraping into the housing.
My turbo will still make boost but at the expense of damaging the housing until sheet starts flying off the blades.
Its time for a new turbo! Hands down!

yeah didint catch that.... check your piping for oil. If there is no whining its prolly a seal like everyone else is saying.
