Am I crazy?
Yep, probably crazy
I've got this thought floating around in my head that I should swap my perfectly good Evo IX 5-speed tranny for a 6-speed tranny. I don't beat on my car and it doesn't see the dragstrip. It will see a driving event here and there at VIR throughout the year. It's also my daily driver. I think the 6-speed would be great for a daily driver and for VIR. I've read about the hit-or-miss failures of 4th gear on the 6-speed.
So, am I crazy for wanting to do this swap
Or, would a built Shep/TRE/Bushwacker 5-speed with different gear ratios work for me?

Won't spend $3K. I can do a direct swap for my 5-speed or find a used 6-speed for around $1500 and sell my tranny for that much. So, in th end it won't really cost me anything.
And I'm not swapping to save money on gas. Wouldn't have bought an Evo if I cared about gas.
VIR is a road course and the 6-speed would likely perform better on that track than the 5-speed. And, for daily driving, I'm used to 6-speeds (owned a RSX Type-S and Audi A4 before my Evo) and enjoy constantly shifting the car. It's just more fun to me. Plus, I think the gearing on the 6-speed is better suited to the type of driving I do.

6th gear ration is ALMOST identical to 5th gear in a 5 speed. The swap doesn't make sense in an evo. If it was more of a cruising gear, many people would think about it.
The 6speeds are know to be weaker than an evo 5 spd. Don't do it.

Is it from a IX? How much? Trade for my 5-speed?
Thanks for this link. I read a bunch of threads about the 6-speed and they kept referencing this thread...and I couldn't find it.
