Transfer case removal?

Hey, i was just wondering if anyone had any good tricks to get the trasfer cases out of an evo 8 w/o dropping out the rack and everything else that goes with it. I was at the dsm shootout at norwalk and ams had to swap theirs out reall quick and they said they pulled off the tail shaft to make it fit the botom of the car. just wondering if this is doable to remove the old and reinstal the new one like this or will removing the tailshaft mess up clearences and angles in the trans case. (since it is a ring and pinion inside there)
later

All they have done is disconnect the driveshaft and pull it out of the trans case.

If its an 03/04 transfer case you can separate the front and back half with and put it back together by hand and not mess anything up. I've done it.

I've also replaced the open diff with an LSD. For that you dont need to drop the transfer case at all.

Not sure if you need any parts but I have the tail end of a transfer case with the mess gear I'm willing to sell cheap.
