Question FMIC - If you don't need the xtra cooling

I have an EVO9 with meth injection running 28psi.

I can pound on the car for 30 minutes straight and not see knock. I've dyno'd the car and have maxed out the rewards from timing and boost. I'm basically maxed out on boost and timing.

Mods include: O2, LICP, TBE, MBC, DROP IN, and METH

On my setup, are there gains to be had from installing an aftermarket FMIC?

I understand that the temps may be a tad lower. Intake temps are the least of my worries. Im interested in increasing airflow.

I have read multiple FMIC threads so let me compile a list of what I've found:
1. Aftermarket FMICs add weight
2. Aftermarket FMIC's add some lag
3. Aftermarket FMIC's sometimes cause boost drop
4. Most people don't even need an aftermarket IC on the stock turbo.

What are the benefits in this situation?

1. yes they do add some weight depending on the intercooler. AMS has a decent IC with minimal weight addition

2. yes. they will add "some" lag because you will have to fill the intercooler to reach the same PSI as previous. easy fix is to up the boost slightly. typically only 1-2 psi at same mod levels.

3. never heard of a "boost drop" because of an intercooler. unless your running some STUPID psi like 50psi or something. maybe what your refering too is the "boost drop" across the intercooler. meaning that the boost drop is from the cooling fins internally at a given PSI. i dont even think you would notice a 1 psi drop. if you do, up the boost by 1 psi.

4. true. most people dont. however, some people have cams, exhaust, etc...they may also live in some hot *** places to help with the cooling.

in your case, its negligable. you have meth to cool your intake charge. you trust it. i dont think i could. id be awaiting a failure and my engine bay to throw up parts...blegh..

You should be looking at intake air temp and pressure drop, not knock. At least, that is what I would look at.

Some cars get better flowing inlet and outlets (maybe not applicable to the Evo), and receive a faster spooling turbo.

Mitsubishi's Starion ICs were known to suck, I would assume the Evo one isn't optimized.

I've had 4 different shops out on the left coast to tell me there really isn't any need to swap the fmic intercooler on my IX until I'm upgrading the turbo. The stocker isn't bad at all. And the meth is another good reason I wouldn't change it. I've been running meth too, and it works great. But I was also informed that even if I stepped up from the IX to an FPgreen, that I would begin to benefit from an intercooler upgrade.

If you did want to upgrade, I would suggest 3" intercooler and no more than 3.5" or you will have more unwanted lag due to it's capacity compared to how much air you're flowing. My .02!

I this 100+ desert heat in az i think fmic certainly helps, I'm about to install an aquamist kit we will see how much the fmic helps....

$130 shipped for the ic and will add about 25whp to ur setup allowing you for a more aggressive tune...

its baout 5 pounds more than stock, works very very well.

If youre not knocking at all from flooring it for 30 min straight u need to tune it more aggressively and wake up the car =-)

First off I will address your list of issues
1. So does your meth kit. So does your MBC and so does a lot of parts you ADD to the car, less weight=better performance in all regards but if the part is a substantial enough improvement hopefully it negates the increase in weight.
2/3. In order to get the full advantage of a FMIC you usually need a big one, bigger FMIC=bigger amount of volume to fill= lag.
4. Most people don't need evo's.

You should get one because
1. Intake temps will fall within a narrower range
2. Colder intake air makes more power and is more resistant to detonation.
3. More Powaa.

^^^I actually had one of these on my car. Once I swapped back to stock, peak boost and torque was about 200 rpm sooner and I was making more power at the same boost levels.

Another friend is running the Buschur race intercooler. He hasn't had it on a real dyno, but from his "butt" dyno he said the extra lag is easily noticeable and he feels it doesn't pull any harder than with the stocker. He is actually going to test it on his car. It's a cammed IX on pump 91. We'll see what the numbers say once he has it strapped to a dyno.

Lets not listen to you. I have that intercooler and felt a difference. You don't like it because it is an ebay intercooler. It has already been tested that it shows gains and even better than some of the name brand one's. I am on stock turbo too. Many people have run these but this thread is not a battle on which intercooler is better than the other. It is about the question of "Is it worth the upgrade?" Yes it is. Especially somebody who is on 28 lbs and running meth. You should be around a 400awhp car. We have already seen that the stocker is not too efficient when you get around that power. An upgrade is good on even a normal bolt on car. Is it needed? No, but for your setup I would say yes. Take it from somebody who is running basically the same thing and not from somebody who had a smaller turbo or a 35r.

SHow me those results.

Show me your before and after dynograph, along with intake air temps.

No it is not worth the upgrade. Should you spend 150 for one that works when its cold out and the car is cold or one that works all day everyday and will not get heatsoaked.

Meth almost negates the need for an IC it cools the intake charge so much an IC is almost worthless.

I have a 35R. I have ran a 16 g with stock, then buschur deluxe IC, then from that to 30R buschur deluxe, then to 30R buschur deluxe, then to 30R 2.3 buschur deluxe (93 octane and c16), then 35R on a custom fabbed IC.

The difference between stock and the buschur was night and day. Spool was only minimaly alter but on hot days it pulls up top like a beast still, where as on the stock IC the car would get dog slow when it was hot. The difference between the buschur and mine I cannot account for because the turbo is so much more efficient that the intake charge is so much cooler already. I'll know if its working when I crank the boost after its back together, if I do

The IC has to be able to cool the air (main goal), the range at which it effectively cools the air and how well it cools it. The mid tanks have a slight role in the way in which this is done but it's mostly due to the cores. The difference between your IC and IC's with good cores is that they work better.

Yours work better than stock, but considering your replacing it I and I think most anybody would rather spend more to get one that provides gains in all situations.

Now you gave a completely different answer then your post before. You found that the buschur intercooler made it night and day on your stock 16g. You were probably making 100awhp less than the guy asking if he should upgrade. I live in Florida which is hotter than most so I can tell you better than a lot that the intercooler outperforms the stocker. Does the ebay intercooler heat soak faster than one 7X the price? A little bit but not major. I never feel my car heat soaking with it. Most of that was from vendors biased comments. You have not actually tested it compared to the buschur so don't give out information you have heard. I actually drive around with it.
