adding a muffler instead of a test pipe

i remember a while back one of the buschurs added another muffler to his exhaust in order to tone down the volume a bit, and it didnt end up losing any or a negligable amount of hp

i am looking to do something similar. my hfc is throwing a code, so i might as well ditch it at this point. but i dont want to go to a testpipe because i honestly dont want my evo to get any louder.

has anyone done a setup like this? or any thoughts as to how i should go about it? thanks a lot

Definately bump for some pics of a bullet muffler in place of the cat. Maybe Buschur will stop in a say how much he could sell one for???

It's not cheap but I would recommend this to anyone looking to tone down their exhaust a bit. I was going to order one from buschur, as the one they supply actually uses a 'custom' bullet muffler that's a bit longer than the standard bullet that is usually on the rear section of their exhausts. Instead, I stumbled across a friend who was buying a buschur testpipe and catback for extremely cheap, and he *just* wanted the testpipe. I cut off the muffler and cut out a section of the testpipe, and basically swapped the two. I ended up with a bullet muffler in the test pipe and a catback with no muffler. He took my testpipe and put it on his car and sold the catback with his hiflo cat to another friend of ours and everyone was happy!

Anyways, It really does sound nice, and tones the exhaust down quite a bit. I know a lot of the buschur guys, Dan in particular, have this done on their DD (600whp or wtf ever) cars and yea, saw negligible power losses, like 3-5whp on a 600whp setup.

I'll snap a pic of mine and put it up here this weekend. Call buschur for pricing on it, I think it was around $240, but worth every penny! Switching from a hiflo cat to a testpipe yielded some pretty serious pants-dyno power gains, probably 15+whp.

so wait, you have their bullet muffler where your test pipe should be, and no muffler where the muffler should be? so essentially you just moved the muffler closer to the engine, and that made a big difference?

No, I have two of their standard bullet mufflers. One in back, one on the testpipe. I only told he convoluted story to show how easy it is to source an extra one of these on the cheap.

If you order a bullet muffler testpipe from buschur, it will come with a different version of the bullet muffler, just a bit longer than the regular one.

Here's pics of my setup (excuse the salt, I love winter!):

I was thinking about doing the same thing but I wasn't sure if I was going to go with a resonator or a bullet muffler. At 4K RPM's I get a lot of drone in the car so I am going to add the muffler to try to eliminate that. I also am going to recirculate my wastegate as it vents to atmosphere right now and that is beginning to get on my nerves.

Wonder if Buschur could make one where there is flanges on both ends so it will bolt up to other catbacks and downpipes.

alright, nice pictures. so in conclusion. i can run a bullet muffler instead of a testpipe in order to keep the drone and volume down, without losing a lot of hp. exacly what i wanted to hear. and thanks for the pics

Magnaflow has a 4"od muffler that has 3" inlet outlet and core that I used for a resonator part # 14419.I installed one about 24" behind test pipe, clears all driveshafts well and cuts down on the droning

resonator is not the same as a muffler. Lowering Db use a muffler, changing the tone taking out a lil bit of the drone use a resonator

why not just get a quiet exhaust in the first place?

I mean you welded a muffler in place of your cat, now that becomes the lowest point of your car now.. No offense, but i bet you the car now becomes a rattle can..

and by looking at the pictures above. (welded muffler). i see numerous leaking exhaust spots.. i hope that was not from after putting that exhaust one.. maybe the slip joint needs to be tightened down more
