UPDATE!:

I took the car to the dealer again today, for the second time about this stalling issue. THe check engine light turned off halfway out my driveway, and the car ran great the entire way to the dealership, no issues at all. i thought the dealer would be able to still pull the code since the ecu wasn't reset, and they said the ecu had no code whatsoever, so they couldn't do anything about that. They fixed the ebrake though, no charge, just a simple adjustment, no big deal. They found a factory ground wire that looked somewhat lose, they fixed that just incase.

Nothing more that they could do, the car wouldn't duplicate the problem again, and they gave it back to me. I left, car ran fine. Went a block down the street, filled up on some 100 octane 76 gas (only station in so cali that i know of that has pump 100 octane!). Leaving the station, car stalls. Start it up just fine, go up to the onramp of the freeway to double back to the dealership, stalls again, in front of CHP none-the-less. Take it back to the dealership (3rd time and 3rd documentation), and the car almost stalled in their driveway again. The manager decided to take the car for a drive himself, so that he can feel first hand what it's doing. I go with him. (the manager already witnessed this when i drove once before, but he wanted to make sure there was no driver error on my part, which is fine). Drove the car for 30 minutes, absolutely nothing! Then pulling back into their service way, the idle drops. he spends 10 minutes playing in the parking lot with the car to try and get it to do it again, finally, it stalls on him too. So now it's a major problem witnessed by the manager, and experienced by him as well. (by the way, he's a very nice guy, trying to take care of me as best he can i think). So he gets on the phone, and gets me a rental car.

Finally, he gets off the phone, and he tells me that the regional service rep will be out to their shop on friday to check out my car and to see what the deal is. But they are just going to drive it around, and try to duplicate it again, so nothing will be done friday either i don't think.

One strange thing about the car today, was the AC. I checked all belts, everything seemed perfect. The AC was checked by the dealer, in perect working order so they say. BUT, after the car died on the manager, the AC started acting up, and the AC died on us almost too. We had it on full blast, level 4, and the car shuddered, and then the AC power dropped, and felt like it was bearly on level 1 (while on level 4 still). (this is sitting at idle after the stall). Then the air got all warm, and humid, not cold at all. A few seconds later, the air comes back on stronger, but not as cold as before. THe ac on the way down to the dealer was very icey cold, like a new car should be. Taking it home before i filled up with gas, it felt much warmer than usual and than it should, and just did not feel cold really at all, until about 30 miutes later.

Everything has been noted with the manager, so we'll see what happens.

Thanks for all the help but still, we can't figure this thing out.

How did you check the tension of the belt?
Did you bring up this point to the dealer to check the belt tension via the procedure?
If they checked the AC, it means the stuck a thermometer in the vent adn it read cold enough. Same thing for the charging system, they check it with a load tester. If at the time of the check the car is not duplicating the problem then it will also pass.

damn man that sucks,

at least it did it on the manager. Good luck man, that sounds jacked up... might be gtting close to lemon law time. Let mitsu reverse engineer the thing and find the root cause but damn. They should give you a new evo if they can't fix it for good this time. That is some dangerous ****.

All I can say is you have an abundance of patience man! They should at least refund a payment or two, if you bring it up to the regional guy he can make it happen, trust me on that.

Definitely keep us updated on this. I haven't had it stall yet, but it's come close several times and the problem is on my list of (currently) minor items that I will have addressed when I get inspired/annoyed enough to drop the thing off at the dealer...

Hey, these issues suck especially when you cannot reproduce them when you bring it in. It almost sounds like the AC compressor could be bad, friction/tension, and causing strain on the belt, thus skipping or jumping and not charging the battery...

Reply to the e-brake issues though. I have had manual cars for a while and so has my friend. His driveway no kidding is at least a 30 or 40 degree driveway. Pulling into it, **** out, my Lancer and his Maxima NEVER roll with JUST the e-brake. It may not be reccomended but I never leave my car in gear due to a remote start installation. I NEVER ROLL. Check that out. That is not good.

I really think this problem is ECU related!! Power, Ground or MAF.

Wire harness would be the first thing I would check if I was the dealer manager.

No code would mean to me power or ground. I have witnessed this with a in-properly installed piggy back A/F system were the ground was a loose contact and the car with just shut down with out a code.

yup, i agree, it sounds to me like an electrical or ECU thing as well. At least witht he check light coming on once, then turning off, i am leaning more towards it being an ECU problem. They checked the grounding system numerous times, and everything checks out.

WHat i don't understand though is how they can tell me that the charging system is fine, when looking at the volts gauge it's not. Now i know that (and the dealer told me this too), that the voltage readouts that i'm reading on the TT, are not the same as what you would get if you hooked up a multi tester to the charging system or battery. Granted, they will be different numbers, but when one drops, the other will too. Every other eclipse, or evo that i've heard about, read about, seen, or been in that has this function on their TT or on their volts gauge, they read much higher than mine, they all read in the mid 13s at lowest even with AC on, and up into the low 14s. My mom's chevy's have always been in the low 14s, (you can tell due to stock volts gauge). But the dealer seems reluctant to acknowledge this as a possible issue. That is the one and only thing that makes me upset with them, is the fact that there is the most obvious indicator, and they won't look at anything about it twice. The voltage dropping is a huge problem, it's not supposed to be in low 12s or 11s with anything on especially the AC. so i'll tell the regional rep on friday about this, and try to light a fire under his butt to have the electrical torn down to figure it out.

There's a possibility that the battery is defective and overlooked. How hard is it to pull out the battery and put the one from the chevy in to test it out?

i don't see why the battery would be the problem, but you're right it isn't hard to put a different new one in, to try anyway. BUT, why should I have to to do it? Let the dealer do it, it's a new car. If they want to keep overlooking things like that, then pretty soon they'd have a lemon law car on their hands.

UPDATE:
I'm going to talk to the regional rep tomorrow, in hopes of figuring this problem out. However, i know that he or she is only coming down to "look" at the issue, so i know no trouble shooting will get done. They are walking on glass it seems about this. I'm going to let the rep know that I'm hoping the car is lemon law'd or bought back on their behalf, because i can only imagine what kind of problems i will have in the future. So, i'm going to try very hard to get out of this car. Rest assured, if they want to give me a new evo, i'll take it, but if they don't, and they simply want to just have mitsu buy the car back, then, i'm on to better things, and won't go mitsu again, (just incase if you know what i mean). why take a chance at the same issues?

It really seems to me that this is the direction the dealership/mitsu wants to take anyway, because they are calling in the higher ups already, very early in the game, without even trying to back-engineer the car to figure out the problem. They haven't touched it since i dropped it off on monday. So that is 6 days they've wasted. And you know nothing will get done on the weekends.

tomorrow is a very important day for me, and i'll post updates for you all by tomorrow night on what happens.

UPDATE!:

Ok, today (friday), i went down to check up on my car. THe regional rep showed up but i never got to talk to them (stayed in the back, never got introduced). They drove the car some more today, and like a charm, the car kept stalling, and the rpms kept falling and then returning to normal idle. They checked the electrical charging system again, twice, and they checked the vaccum on the car. They unplugged my boost gauge, and the car still stalled (thinking it was pulling too much vaccum). They plugged it back in, and still same thing. Nothing they are doing or have done has come close to fixing the problem.

Finally, the day winds down, and the manager comes to me and says that the reps (essentially his boss i guess), told them that they will no longer pay for a rental car, and no longer continue to service or trouble shoot the problem and the car UNLESS i procede to take the car home, and remove all aftermarket items that are on the car, and return the vehicle to stock. After a lengthy arguement (not heated, just a mild debate), i reluctantly accepted.

Got home, my freind and i put everything back to stock (which by the way is only unhooking the boost gauge, re-installing the factory air box and intake rubber pipe, and removing the turbo timer and grounding kit). WE finished doing this in about 2 hours time, we weren't in any rush. I had to take my freind home, and i used this oppertunity to test drive the car. Everything ran perfect, car ran *****in even with the AC on. We were starting to think that maybe the TT or the grounding kit was causing the problems, since it seemed to be driving extremely well. UNTIL we got to his house that is. pulling up into his driveway, the car almost died. Rpms dropped to 0, dash lights came on quickly, then the car's idle grabbed, and shot back up to normal idle around 800. WE continued to drive around his neighborhood, and the car would continuously do this. Looked under the hood for any missed connections, loose connections, anything. Everything was as a factory fresh car should be, nothing wrong at all. So needless to say, with the car completely stock now, (the car started having these issues stock before i touched it as well by the way), it's going back on monday for the fourth time. And this time, they had better try and find a cure to this troubling issue.

By the way, i'm going to post another post in evo general forum, about our AC systems, to find out if anyone else has the issues with their AC as i'm having, and this new post is being done to at least show some support for either my side of the case or theirs, and may be used in court if it ends up coming to that.

At this poing, mitsubishi (corporate), is treating this as an issolated case, and also treating me very badly as well. They do not want to take responsibilty for anything, even though it is a warrantable issue. THey continue to insist that much of this is normal for this car, since they tested a stock brand new one and it showed the same symptoms and issues to an extent as well. I am being treated like a stupid moron who doesn't know anything, and i'm very offended, and disgusted with their approach. THere are simple symptoms that the dealer has yet to address, because they just don't care what i have to say. so if they cannot find a cure this next time around, go lemon law, and forget mitsubishi. It's too bad too because this has been the most fun car i've ever had, but the company's address to certain issues will drive me away from ever considering a mitsu ever ever again. If they fix it this time, great, i'll be happy, and continue to love the car. BUt at this point, mitsu's standpoint seems to be leaning towards a lengthy court battle just to get things right. Mitsu truly is satan. (but not the evo, it's a great car, with an unfortunate problem).

look for my other posts in evo general, and constant updates here!

After taking all your aftermarket parts off, did you reset your ECU?

Dude, they are killing me with this.. "we tested it against a stock car and it did the same thing" How F'ing stupid is that... Just because something is normal doesn't mean it is right. If you **** yourself evertime you see the color blue it is "normal" but it sure as hell is not right!!!

I can understand them not trouble shooting a car with after market parts (as was the case with me) becuae they don't have wiring diagrams for the aftermarket stuff and it is possible that aftermarket electronics could invalidate the factory test procedure.

But it sounds to me like they are lost and trying to pass the buck. Now that it is stock, you need to call a lemon attorney in your area. DO NOT take it back yet. File the initial lemon complaint with the help of an attorney (there are several in my state, georgia, that will handle everything for free (to you anyway) but the filing fee (50-75 bones))

Then wait for them to contact you for the final repair attempt. Only complication is that if mitsu contests that this is not a problem but rahter "normal" behaviour you will have a hard time with the lemon law.

Damn that sucks man. Make sure you get all your case numbers (mmusa and techline) and try to get printed transcripts of those cases so you can check them for accuracy since your not the one entering the info and they may be relavant in a legal case.

I agree man, mitsu is evil. The only reason I bought a mitsu product is because it's an EVO. I swear there techline call procedure manual reads like this:

1.) ask mechanic for symptoms
2.) place call on hold
3.) take large hit from crack pipe
4.) pickup call
5.) tell mechanic symptoms are normal and not to repair anything under warranty.
6.) hang up call
7.) pat yourself onthe back for saving mitsu money
8.) reward yourself with another hit from the crack pipe.

The funnyest thing is when you call mmusa they answer the phone with "high my name is #####, how may I provide you with excellent customer service today?" Well for starters you can go take the crackpipe away from your techline staff and while your at it make sure you have removed your head from your ars before continuing with this call!

Sorry for the rant, but those of you who have had similar experience with mitsu and techline can relate I think.

Throwing out another possibility...
The MAF could be faulty and could cause symtoms discribed. Was it in any way tampered with during the intake swaps?....
If it's not too much trouble take it off and make sure it's clean of oil residue that may have transfered from the CAI filter.
