1st and 2nd gear gone?

Hello All,

So when I put the shifter into 1st and/or 2nd gear, the gear does not feel engaged and the car goes nowhere when I apply gas. Also, when the clutch is fully released when in 1st or 2nd gear, the car does not stall and the engine stays on. When putting the shifter into 3rd, 4th, 5th, or reverse, I can feel the engagement when I slightly release the clutch. Today, I had to reverse back to my house from the end of my block after I went through the stated scenarios.

The car has a bit over 22k miles. Mods are in my sig, and as you can see, drivetrain is stock. Previous owner did track the car. I bought the car at about
19.8k miles and have been doing normal driving only.

So am I right? 1st and 2nd gear gone?

TIA

sounds to me like either the shift fork or the 1-2 syncro. did anything happen like you missing a gear or did you just come out one morning and it was gone?

When I took the car out for the first time today, I backed out of the driveway and put it in 1st and drove off and when I put it in 2nd, the motor just revved up. I'd go from 1st to 3rd and that worked, but by the time I reached the end of my block, both 1st and 2nd weren't making the car move.

Bearings on the intermediate shaft are worn so badly that proper gear engagement can not take place?

Could this be true even if its only 1st and 2nd gear that are not engaging?

I had a buddy with a 2G GS-T who swore he just had worn synchros because of a notchy 4th gear. All of a sudden one day it wouldn't go into 4th. It would fall in the slot but then just rev freely like it was in neutral. When he stopped the car and tried to go into 4th from a dead stop, it still did the same. Then he tried 3rd, which also would rev freely. 1st, 2nd, 5th, and reverse all still worked fine, though. My first thought was a bent shift fork. He took it to the shop and opened up the transmission. Sure enough, the intermediate shaft bearings were worn out causing the 3 and 4 gears to not be able to engage properly.

you probably need a new clutch. why dont you try to to it in first or second gear with the engine off then start the engine and release the clutch and see if the engine stall or you feel enagagement. if the engine doesnt stall then you probably need a new cluth.

Thank you for the insight. So did he just replace the bearings or synchros too?

I did that and it was stated in the original post. Would that really mean a new clutch? Because I feel engagement in all other gears...

If your clutch slips it would slip on all gears not just 1st and 2nd.

I don't know if your clutch is good or bad what I do know is when the clutch goes bad it's bad on all gears not just first and second. Get some of your friends to push your car and start driving from 3rd gear. If your gears work from 3rd and on you might have a blown 1st and 2nd gear.

It was more like a transmission rebuild. Bearings, synchros, and shaft were all worn down. While they were in there, all the other synchros were replaces, along with the shift forks, which showed some signs of wear due to age. Keep in mind, though. This was on DSM. I'm pretty sure the Evo has steel shift forks, but you'll still have to spend a nice chunk of money.

Probably clutch drops on the 1-2 shift trying to chirp the tires.
