If my old service manager still worked there, then yes, I woulda took it straight in. But since she doesn't, I'm hesitant. I don't know the new SM down there so I'm not sure how a warranty claim would work out (I doubt my tranny warranty exists due to the clutch/flywheel and if I'm gonna go through all that trouble I'll just send it to Shep).

The common story is that lockout started after going to the track or practicing launching, etc. On a sidenote, if you have an aluminum flywheel it makes matters worse since the steel insert warps real bad as well.
Quick question for anyone able to answer regarding lockout issues, I'll start with some background first.

Lately I've noticed that when ever I am doing freeway speeds, about 65-70 mph, and start messing with gear selection it's difficult to engage the lower gears regardless of which I choose aside from 6th; for example, I would go from 6th to 3rd or 2nd or even 1st which are all extremely risky.

Now here's the catch, when I slow down to a complete stop and fiddle with gear selection I would be able to pick any gear freely without the restriction that was imposed of when doing 65-70 mph. I tried this 4 times and all 4 times I would get the same response from gear engagement.

So at this point you're probably going to ask me "have you had any grinding issues?" I have had grinding issues with going into 2nd gear from 1st and 2nd into 3rd every once in a while right out of the factory with 15 miles on it. At the moment the car has ~ 11200 miles on it and none of the fluids have been changed aside from regular oil changes; the car is completely stock which should help answer many questions as well.

Would you classify this as lockout?

^^^ +1. Pao's last paragraph is similar to mine except that mine only grinds going into second. I've had Mitsu drive it, but I guess it wasn't messed up enough for them to tear it down. When I shift regularly in the morning into second gear it grinds, but if I do it slow it doesn't. This only happens when I first start the car though. Yet it bothers me because it's everyday...I'd also like a clarification on "lockout" because I sometimes have had instances where I cannot get into whatever gear I'm trying to get into. That is without riding the car at all and just shifting normally. I also have a 9MR.

Same hear, slow shifts works best for me as well when going from 1st to 2nd when I first start driving the car after a warm up of about 3-4 minutes. And the dealership tried the same scenario but they weren't able to replicate it; I even went to the extent of dropping off the car early morning and went back to start the car for them 4 hours later but could not replicate the problem.

That's what they told me exactly. "The technician could not replicate the problem." I had a friend with a 5 spd. IX GSR that had his synchros replaced twice by Mitsu. His advice to me was to really screw up the synchros for them to open it up and fix the problem, but I didn't feel like hurting my evo...

Yeah I felt the same way when I read that some where in this forum. I was like hmmm... well if I really screw up the synchros then maybe Mitsubishi might check it out for me and even possibly replace it out right. But then I was like what if the tranny... what if this... what if that... and Mitsubishi dealership's aren't the best when it comes to warranty work. This notion really got me thinking about abusing the car then taking it in because chances are pretty good they'll be like "oh, but it seems that you might have been racing" and deny me of any warranty work without even any proof aside from the fact that the car isn't working as properly as I like it to.

yes it is a warranty claim ....i have the same problem with mine ..there is a TSB on the car for 5th gear synchro ..mitsu was going to replace mine but because i have an aftermarket they told me it would not be covered....(because of the clutch&shortshifter)
i just let the rpms drop before i shift 5th now ..untill the whole tranny break's im not replacing it .. i know about 6 other people with ix's that have the same problem...

There is a TSB for Grinding on 03-04, I'm not sure if there is one for later models

+1 on syncros.

I hate that 2nd gear grind in the mornings! Usually goes out after the first time I shift into second so no biggie, is just annoying.
