Worth It?

HKS 3037S Turbo Upgrade, is this the best turbo upgrade kit out there or are there better? Also, the highest grade fuel I can run around me is 92octane. So would it be worth it? I have a small track and drag strip close to me but wont be visiting them often, maybe once a month. That 540HP looks very inticing but what kinda fuel/upgrades will I need to be able to run it to its full potential?

me and my dad are building my evo's engine from ground up replacing everything and we decided to go with the HKS GT3037S. The fuel upgrades that u will need are a throttle body and fuel rail theres probally more and dont forget a high performance intercooler and with the big turbo upgrade u will really have to build the engine up.

This is what im installing into the engine

Cams
Cam Shafts
Pistons
Rods
Crankshaft
and more stuff but its 2 in the morning cant remember it all we started yesterday.

Oh and yeah its worth it if u got the money

you will have to spend around 10grand to make 3037 work well
if you need a daily driver you should look into hks2835 or greddy 20g (hks is ball bearing), I bought greddy 20g kit for $3900. shipped, its good for 450hp and I can keep my stock internals and use emanage.
with 3037 you'll need
a programable ecu, cams, piston, rods, injectors, fuel rail, exhaust manifold, twin plate clutch, 10 grand might not be enough

Is that 450 HP to the ground or at the crank?

what about upgrading to the japanese Ti turbo? From what i gather, the turbine internals are Al-Ti alloy while the USDM turbos are steel... Wouldn't that provide lower lag w/o any other modifications? How much boost/hp can that turbo support, and is it ball-bearing?

its not ball bearing, wouldnt make any power difference except lower lag

How much would this affect the reliability of the car?

Also, are there any differences between the Japanese and US models? I can get the J-spec Evo8 if I wanted to but of course it would cost more....almost 6G more. Anything special that would make it a better choice since im getting this new turbo upgrade?

Thanks for all the help BTW

basically those are same turbines, in different housings
titanium is better, stronger better resistance to heat, but will not affect reliability, I think.
you have to ask yourself how much you want to spend and how fast you want to go
I went with smaller turbo, because my evo is a daily driver, I wont drag race a lot. Ill let you know how it feels once I receive it, It should be a week or two more

hey seba,

where'd u pick that 20g up? is that a direct replacement on the evo8?

what did greddy do to the turbo? what rpm does it have full spool?

how much boost are you planning on running with it?

what injectors are you gonna run, and are you upgrading your fuel pump (i've heard the stock one is a 210lph)?

is a 20g really worth it over the stock evo8 turbo?.. i mean, AMS already has 380whp out of theirs.. and that's with stock internals.. with a 20g u might be able to squeeze 400whp, right?

i think i definitely will have to go with something bigger than that.. i want at least 430whp..

still, i'm very interested in seeing your results!.. will you be dyno tuning your car anywhere in the local area? .. at AMS perhaps? i'd like to check it out!

While the 3037S is happy to make power on the factory head, if you want to add more powerband, you need to raise rev limit. Doing that, there is only so much you can do before you add double valve springs and therefore accelerate the wear on the seats. If you're going to pop the head off and send it out, I'd do the following as an idea:

272 cams (or higher)
adjustable cam pulleys
Upgraded springs
Titanium Retainers
Oversize valves

Headwork can make your car suck lots of air (and lots of money). Big names aren't always the best; take a look around.
