Evo 8 tranny, how long will it hold?

Well i just got my hands on an evo 8 (2003) which i plan on pushing 400hp to the wheels on. Im used to dsm's and i had a built gsx. I was wondering how long the trannys will hold up at 400awhp? Or if its going to be like a dsm where i should just go ahead and buy a shep/tre trans?

Not well at all. I'm in the process of a shep tranny myself. 32,000 miles with the stock clutch with power and mods in my sig. The stock clutch should tell you how I try to baby my car. Even so, my tranny took a ****.

i will hold up as long as you take care of it, proper fluid and fluid changes and don't beat the ever loving **** out of it and it will be fun, there are people who have run well over 800 horse on a stock tranny and have been ok(for a while)

Man I wonder about this. Maybe im just lucky. I am running 370whp with 100% alky with the original oem clutch (47,000 miles) currently. My tranny and tc are perfect with no issues. No I don't drag race and haven't launched the car to many times but this power is 150whp over stock and the clutch hasn't slipped yet. I have had a crap load of dyno passes with different tunes as well.

So to make a long story short.....it all depends on how you drive the car IMO.

This really depends upon how the car is driven and treated. Some didn't last being stock but normally 400hp shouldn't be a consern. If you are are running an unsprung disk clutch and decide to be side stepping the clutch you can't compain about it blowing up. You have driven a DSM and if you can get those to last an EVO trans shouldn't be a problem as they are more heavy duty. I have ran well over 400hp daily without issues (knock on wood).

Well, let's just keep im mind that Mitsu did issue TSB's for 03's definately and possibly 04's. The TSB was for synchro problems.

Let me rephrase my statement. The tranny will not experience catastrophic failure with 400whp. But... Your synchro's will wear no matter how you drive the car no matter what fluid you use. Almost every 03-04 has grinding or notchy problems.

If you're racing, which I'm sure you are, then don't waste your time debating. Get the shep tranny and transfer case now otherwise you will be in trouble sometime.

Well the tranny that was in my dsm had 60k stock miles on it and well, after a month of beating on it, and racing it and alot of 7500 rpm shifting, it does NOT like to go into second gear under power. I have to pull SOOOO hard on that shifter to get it into 2nd.
