sometimes you can mistake the retainer for the crush washer, after it has been bent, as the crush washer

It is OEM. I checked part numbers on the one that came off the car and the new one and they are the same. It still has a slight leak.. I wonder if the one I have is defective or warped or something.. I didnt see any drips on the driveway this AM but after I wiped it off yesterday and checked it this AM it had some oil on it.

I have seen the crush washer issue on this forum before. Without doing a search, I recall that some people's Evos did not come with a crush washer from the factory, as they learned on their first oil changes. That's how mine was. Five oil changes later, I still don't use any washer, and it does not leak.

I have a thought and it may be too basic, but the community will correct me if it is wrong. I typically dub a small amount of oil on the seal of the oil filter before installing. I remember being told that if you don't it may leak or stick.

Yep I did that too.. the filter actually had some sort of prelube on it.. but I put some oil on it anyways. It looks to have stopped leaking after I took it off, checked it out then re-tightened it.

If the oil filter is leaking, make sure that the old rubber gasket from the previous filter didn't stay stuck to the filter housing. If so, when you put on the new filter (with its own rubber gasket) it doesn't have enough thread engagement and can leak or pop off.

Anyone have the part number from mitsu for those silver looking crush washers? I use oem filters and need some of those washers. Thanks.

The first time i changed the oil in my Evo 8 the oil pan with the bolt and crush washer was all painted at the same time.. when i removed the drain bolt you couldnt even hardly tell that the crush washer was since the paint was holding it in place. I knew there had to be one there and after a gentle pry with a small flate blade it popped right off.

Make sure you don't over tighten the filter when putting it on, that can make it leak as well.

If it still leaks or you're worried about it, just re-do the oil change. It isn't terribly expensive, and you could still use your filter on there now since it is brand new.
