Ummm.... It's an oil cooled turbo.

It's, like, designed that way...

I would say that if you have never seen an oil cooled turbo before you don't get out very much.

A lot of aftermarket turbos aren't watercooled. They won't last as long as a factory turbo will but it shouldn't make much of a difference anyway.

We have people ask that question all the time. I find it rather funny because most turbos use to come oil cooled only and then coolant ports were added because turbo manufactures found people weren't changing there oil at the scheduled intervals. This was like 20+years ago. Now people have become so use to water cooled turbos the standard has become reversed.

Oil quality and durability is considerably better than even ten years ago making coolant ports a design the turbo manufacturer determines necessary. If the turbo is only oil cooled like the BorgWarner"'s then it is strongly suggested to have a air-to-oil cooler. This would be no different when upgrading to a larger turbo with coolant ports and making sure your cars coolant system is capable of handling higher temps from the new turbo. If not then a larger capacity radiator would be the proper supporting upgrade needed. The Honda guys know all about this.

Most street cars don't have issues with either as long as synthetic oil is used and changed when needed, car is at full operating temp before getting its *** kicked, and given at least 30sec of cool down when done.
