EGT gauge

What are your opinions on the Autometer EGT gauge compared with the popular Japanese units such as HKS, Greddy, and Blitz...etc.

What EGT are you guys seeing on your set up?

i would definately get the autometer,
it's a mechanical gauge which is much simpler and easier to deal with than any electronic gauge. where there is electronics and stepping motors, there's more **** to break and go wrong

Are any of you evo owners using an EGT gauge on your EVO? What gauge are you using and how high are your EGT's?

HUH? What do you mean by electronic vs mechanical. Are you thinking of a boost gauges (electronic ones have a sender unit and mechanical ones have a vacuum line going to the gauge) or are you referring to a digital readout display vs a sweeping arm.

EGT gauge reads resistance carried through a wire, so I guess they are all electronic?

I think he is asking about the quality and diffs between EGT gauges. For example:

Autometer goes up to only 1600F (870 deg C)
Greddy goes up to 1200 deg C

How do the longevity of the probes compare, ie, is the cheaper Automometer more prone to burning up faster and then sending particles into the precious turbo (yes, we mount EGT probes before the turbo if we want it to be useful).

And what EGT's are people seeing. If the cruising EGT on an EVO is say 1550 deg C, I don't think I'd want a gauge that only has 50 F before it maxes out...

VDO. Matches my gauges perfectly and they're good quality at a low cost. Of course mine wasn't setup properly, but that'll be fixed this weekend.

Great bang for your buck.

BTW, I don't know of any electronic EGT's. Unless you have a stock pyrometer how can you get an electronical signal for the gauge to tap into? Every single one I know of comes with its own probe that returns temp readings through variations in voltage. If there's another way people are doing it I'd be interested to hear it.

That’s the reason why it's electronic, as opposed to your standard mercury or alcohol thermometer...not used to make EGT probes...
The egt measures the small voltage potential that occurs when you heat two dissimilar metals (present in the probe)…hence electronic.

Ok, then by that standard what EGT's are not electronic? I don't think I've come across one yet.

He was referring to any arbitrary numbers

Ok, how about getting back to the original questions:

1) What EGT reading are you seeing on the EVO and which cylinder runs the hottest.

2) What are the differences between the different manufacturers of EGT gauges & probes, related to function, range, responsiveness and longevity.

I'm also curious on this one. I've already got my gauges and I'm wondering what cylinder and how many inches off the port to measure ? (and what's "normal" for a totally stock EVO?) thx

Finally decided on what gages I'm going to run. These are the new Apexi EL II gages. They have black and white faces + blue neon back lighting. They wire up like the Defi gages using daisy chaining. They also have a EGT gage which HKS didn't offer. They also make 2 tachs with the same features + shift light peak memo ect.

Value, have you seen the Defi gauge pod that replaces the speedo and tach with a completely new unit? It has boost, egt, oil press, water temp, and something else in analog (dials) and tach and speed in digital (like an S2K). I saw a pic of it from a show in Japan, but that would be an awesome piece of gear, esp since I don't want a bunch of gauge pods scattered around the car....
