I was reading somewhere that the stock flywheel is 14lbs? If so then you will get some extra noise out of a lighter flywheel. Happens to BMWs and their boat anchor OEM flywheels, a lighter one goes in and it "rattles". Will only do it at idle.

It's not unusual. depending on the car and the transmission location and sound deadening, sometimes you will hear it sometimes you won't. I got 2000 miles and I hear mine, but am not concerned about it.

Damn Timz... you weren't kidding about using that line in your sig were ya!

Yeah its the T.O.B. Good idea to take it by the dealer and let them make a note of it now. If it sounds bad enough they may replace it under warranty. But at least get it noted and have them do a PQR (product quality request) on it.

Ahhh so I guess, the only way to get it fixed is when you do your next clutch job and replace a new bearing?

You always want to replace it when you do a clutch, not worth it not to. TOB can be pretty screwed up before it will actually cause a problem other then noise.

And yes mad_VIII, you like that.

I have the same exact problem. The rattling noise gets louder with the AC on; but when you depress the clutch, the noise goes away. I had a Honda Delsol before my EVO and it made a similar noise. I thought it was the throwout bearing so I pulled the tranny(much easier on Hondas) and discovered one of the springs on the clutch disc came loose and was rattling around. I don't know much about Mitsubishi parts; but I hope it's only a T.O. bearing noise. If anyone takes their car in--Keep us all posted.

I'm hearing the same as you Jinu0808 ever since I picked up my car with only 8 miles on the odo. It's that rattling that sounds like something is loose and I thought it was the dp heat shields at first. I replaced it with UR dp and it's still there. And your right, it only happens when it's in neutral. My driveway has a little slope and when the car sits unevenly, the rattle goes away. It's an intermittent rattle so hopefully, someday, I'll find where that rattling is coming from.

Oh... on the side note, I don't think it's the throwout bearing on the clutch. I had an ACT clutch on my ol' missed turbo teg and the rattle is similar. If you depress the clutch just a little bit to the point where it starts to grab, the rattle on my teg goes away..and it's constantly there even in gear so I know it was the throwout bearing but on the Evo, it's not doing that.

I just traded my 01 Eclipse GT in for an Evo and the Evo came with the noise.

My Eclipse also had the exact same noise. Rumor has it that the transmission/clutch/etc in the Evo is very similar to or the same as the one in the GT. It seemed to be harmless. I took the Eclipse in to the dealer twice and complained about the noise, but they told me that it was normal and would not touch it. It sucks because on a hot day it makes your car sound like a POS (the noise occurs when things get heated up).

Rumor also has it that the clutch plates that Mitsu uses are cheap (other threads on this board seem to indicate that) and that the springs get loose, which causes the noise.

My $0.02

hey jinu...i'm bringing my car to service tomorrow. Tons of stuff to fix...clutch feels funny, tranny makes noise when i shift...like a slight grind, ECU wire harness corrosion recall, and noise when a/c turned on. I bought the car for 30K and it has to be perfect.

Guys

I think I have a serious problem. Besides the spinning nose that i have while the car is in neutral, when my clutch is depressed 100 %, the sound starts again. Anything in between, the noise disappears. I have the HKS twin plate GD max. Also, sometimes moving off in 1st gear from a dead stop can be a *****. The car jerks (feels like clutch is slipping). I wonder if the guys who installed my clutch screwed up although they claimed that it was normal.

Ben

Ok guys there is nothing that you can do to change the neutral gear rattle you are hearing short of putting a thick gear oil in your tranny. Which I highly don't recommend, this noise is not harmful to your car in anyway other than being annoying to you. Now I would not doubt that mitsu fixes this problem on the newer models, but for those of us who already have one will just have to live with it. The noise you are hearing isn't the throw out bearing, the two noises they make when going out are completly different. Also you will notice that if you slightly raise the idle rpm the noise goes away also indicating that the problem isn't a throw out bearing. Hope this shed's some light on things.

Yes BadazzCR you are right about raising the idle rpm and the noise goes away. I have tried it once u past 1600 RPM the noise some how just goes away. I brought it back to the dealer yesterday for recall and show them the problem. They told me something in the TRANNY is not right, and they need my permission to take it apart and if they FIND out that if i abused the car they will charge me for all the parts and labor so I figure this is not worth it cuz no matter what they gonna find a way to BLAME it on me.
