Diagnose this sound - Video Included

I did a pull in 2nd gear today and about 5k rpms it sounded like an open waste gate. I now have this....

I have an appt. at the dealer tomorrow because I need it fixed fast. Most people tell me it's lifters.

Let me know what you think.

You're telling me. Hopefully this doesn't turn into something crazy expensive.

Either a rod is knocking or your valves ticking. A friend just told me. But good luck bro.

Luckily I only have to drive it about 1/2 mile to get to the dealer. I checked the plugs and everything looks fine. No CEL's, just the noise.

Sounds like it could be an exhaust leak. Does the car idle normally other than the sound? Feel around the manifold and downpipe, see if you can feel any exhaust (careful if its hot!).

I visually inspected the gaskets and couldn't see anything wrong though I didn't feel around while it was running. I checked the tightness of the manifold/hotside/downpipe bolts as well. Another of my friends said it sounded like exhaust as well.

I did not smell exhaust either.

From the video it sounds like an exhaust leak. I've had plenty with my old 240sx. You won't be able to really see them. I had my 240 roll back into a ditch and it blew every gasket out except the mani to head gasket. I couldn't see it, but by god I could hear it. What you can do is,since it seems to be coming from the mani, so if the engine is cold now you might want to try this. Take some soapy water and spray it all around the head and mani and see if you see bubbles. You'll have to look quick as it will heat up quickly and burn the water off.

Dang man, sounds like a major exhaust leak or something.

Run some seafoam thru her and it will show you where the leak is at if it is even leaking

Good luck!

It sounds like the valve, maybe rod but not totally sure on that one. Try this, us a long flat head screw driver and put it on the head/ block it you can and put your hear on the handle it will help you tell more where the sound it coming from.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll check that stuff in a few minutes just for my own sanity. I'm still dropping it at the dealer since it's Friday and they should be able to get it fixed by tomorrow. It's my daily driver so I need it running 24/7.

sounds like exhaust leak to me as well....about 3200 spark plugs firin off each minute ....

but if its that, you should see black soot whwere the leak is coming from, and of carse smell it....i'd also feel under the mani, since you cant really see under it, for any cracks or anything....

did anything happen right before you heard this noise??? idk if you have any gages in your car, but anything out of the ordinary?

Nothing out of the ordinary. I just jammed on the gas and then it sounded like an open waste gate when i hit about 5800rpm.

I do think it's an exhaust leak after driving it to the dealer. Doesn't make the noise when you decel and I would think lifters would be making noise all the time.

If it's a leak it'll be a cheap fix and avoids me having to rip it all apart and have the possibility of mis-diagnosing it.
