Anyone have problems pumping gas?
Anyone have problems pumping gas?
As usual i'll be pumping gas with the car turned off of course. But the last couple times at the pump, while pumping gas, the pump would suddenly stop pumping (and not because the gas tank is full). I would then attempt to pump again, then after couple seconds it would stop pumping again, and i would have to reattempt each time. This happens when i let it auto pump gas into the car AND when i do it manually. Anyone know why this is?

Hmm... Thats odd... I found out the way to beat it is to only pull the trigger half way while pumping ( yea It will take you 2X the amount of time to fill but it wont keep stoping on youat least until the tak is really full)

It is the evaporative capture system on the nozzle. If you were to point the nozzle down towards the ground and pull the big rubber boot back all the way, gas will come pouring out. The system is supposed to capture the gas fumes and not let them into the atmosphere, when people overfill (top off) it causes fuel to get trapped in there and makes the nozzle click off because pressure builds in the boot.
Does that answer your qestion?

Yup, the station I normally go to has two pumps that are dam near impossible to fill up on, it cuts of every few seconds.
They have one pump that works fine every time. I think it has something to do with the vapor recovery thing and the angle of the fuel nozel and filler neck. I'll have to take a closer look at the pumps next time and see whats up.

Sometimes with the heat you'll get some kind of a vapor lock that effects ceartin types of pumps more than others.
If I'm filling up and the pump starts clicking off like that I kinda shake the rear end of the car back and forth a little to get the gas thats trapped in the tube to settle down in the tank bit.
I know it kinda sounds crazy, but it works for me.

Happens to me at almost all stations, almost all the time. It's the angle of the nozzle and neck in conjunction with the vapor recovery as mad VIII said. Try turning the nozzle upside down. It tends to work better like that. You may get some dirty looks from attendants though, so be forewarned.
Forgot to mention...this started happening in May and never happened before then. At first I thought it was because of the larger fuel pump...but then I realized that really didn't make much sense.

This car has a saddleback fuel tank that is almost like having two tanks side by side. I used to have a Corvette with this same arrangement and funny things could happen if the car wasn't level at the pump. Here is a pic of the tank.
