External wastegate
External wastegate
I tried searching but i couldn't find anything to answer my question.
I was at a shop the other day and i was talking to one of the guys and he was telling me about external wastegates. He was telling me that a external wastegate hold boost better and is better than an internal. Is this true? Is there any way to do an external on a stock turbo or a evo green? Is it worth doing?

BR tested this early on. His testing showed that yes there was a gain at the top end, but it took out all the bost spike which help the evo turbo build boost and most of the middle range and #'s were down so he decided it wasnt worth it. Just do an o2 dump and u will get the same effect.
that was an old test and nobody can find it. New ones are on the way. Just search. I am one of them. I have pics on 2 other threads. I still don't see how buschur lost midrange. It is impossible. An external wastegate will take away the spike and make a more consistent boost curve which leads to more torque and horsepower. Everyone with these wastegate dumps have shown signs of this but an external should do the job even better.
external wastegates hold boost better..even on a stock turbo. A buddy of mine has a tial on his 14b 1st gen, and he's had great success. It all depends on how involved u want to get into your setup. Most people probably will suffice with an internal wastegate on our smaller stock 16g setups..but some want absolute max potential.
Suppose that you were, in fact, able to plumb your manifold for an external gate. This would then make your internal gate redundant. In fact, since the single, larger diameter, external gate could handle the 16G turbine's exhaust bleedoff duties all by itself, then you would in no way want the turbine housing's integral gate opening before your target boost level, or, it would just be killing spoolup. So, if you couldn't find a non-gated 16G housing(do they even exist?), then you'd either have to wire or weld the integral gate shut, or radically shorten the actuator rod so as to preload the integral gate shut beyond the boost level at which the external gate is set to open .

Has anyone welded theres shut? It sounds as if not to many people are doing this from what i can tell.
Is there any benefit to doing an 02 dump or is it just for the sound?

There is a huge benefit to the external dump. Close to 14hp in some cases. A lot of people in the nissan world do it. They weld the flapper shut and then you buy a tial flange and then get it welded on to your cast iron. I have ridden in cars with them....while they do hold boost better....Im not so sure if it provides a good bang for the buck.
An external Waste gate will obviously help you control boost better, that goes without saying. The fact that our turbos are twin scroll makes a little more complicated than your Nissan/Subaru Example. Another solution would be to remove the Internal WG flapper mount a Ext WG onto a tubular o2 housing. The only problem with that is the lack of space.
I personally like the solution of a Forge WG actuator. It is rebuildable and Inspectable.
