I have already done this twice before but now I am running into trouble. When trying to unbolt the subframe I have removed all the bolts but one. The bolt circled in the picture is what I am having trouble with. My subframe is still on and I am trying to remove the nut that goes on this bolt. However, when I try to remove it the bolt itself is spinning. I have tried to tighten it back down but as soon as I apply more than about 50 ft/lbs the bolt seems to slip. It feels similar to a stripped bolt. I don't understand how this bolt is connected to the car. Is it supposed to be a ceptive bolt welded to the car frame? The bolt on the other side of my car works fine but it does wiggle a bit but does not spin like the broken one.



How can I fix this?

what were you trying to do?

 

Tools needed:

Vise grips
Pry bar
Low powered air gun
Second human being

Take the vise grips clamp on bolt(where threads are not)
Ask second human being to hold vise grips(Tightly)
Take pry bar apply downward pressure(towards the direction of nut removal)
Take low powered air gun/racket with socket and slowly remove nut.

The second human will/should prevent the bolt from spinning
The pry bar will aid in gravitational pull and spin nut off
Low powered gun will insure that you dont over spin the nut to where your pry bar will slip off and your human will spin with bolt.


After removal consult Mitsu on why this bolt is spinning.

P.s. You may also have a hole leading you to the bolt head, I don't remember if so, but you can cram pry bar in there(again second human) to jam up the bolt. For this you will need two pry bars. One for cramming and one for the nut in the third step.

How am I supposed to hold the bolt with vice grips while also removing the nut with a socket? That would be impossible.

 

Does anyone know how exactly that bolt is connected to the frame of the car. I am thinking of cutting into the side of the wheel well to weld that bolt back to the frame, however, I am wondering if there will be some kind of metal plate blocking my access.

 

Its a captive bolt. The only way I can get these out is to drill a hole and tack weld the bolt to prevent it from spinning. Then weld a patch panel over the hole.

You didn't read the entire post did you? Hence the reason for the second human being.........

 

Think about it for a minute, If I am holding the bolt, there would be no way to fit a socket or vice versa. The only place where the bolt sticks out is after the nut. I.E. - you can fit either a socket or vice grips, but not both. No matter how many hands you have

so you already got that nut off that bolt that is spinning? That what I was explaining that you need to do.

Vise grip the none threaded portion of the bolt, have someone hold it, place an air gun on the nut that won't come off because the bolt spins, then remove......

If you already got the nut off the spinning bolt, then you're solid, just take the car to a welder and have them weld that bolt still.....

have you tried a hammer and a chizzel?!?!? hittting the nut on the side/edge of it.. cant see the nut in the picture, i think im blind hahha

 

Hey, the picture I posed I grabbed of the internet, it already has the nut removed. In my case the nut is still stuck on there. I will update hte picture to show my car. Sorry for the confusion, I was just using that picture to point out which bolt it was rather than showing what was actually happening.

Ok the only thing I can think of you will have to do is:

You will need a shop with the right tools, or if you have them even better.

What will have to be done is, they will need to cut that bolt off
remove the frame
cut open that housing/case inclosing that bolt head
remove ruined bolt/nut combo
Reweld a new bolt from the dealer(or lowes if you can find a similar setup) to the inside of that housing/case inclosing that bolt

Reweld shut that housing/case inlcosing the bolt
reinstall the frame when done doing what ever is being done

guess you'd have to tack weld it when you get it all cleaned up.
