Transmission Problem?

Hello all,

Lets start off with a little background info. Maybe the previous owner is still around here on the forums and can tell me.

I bought my EVO from a used Porsche dealership in Bellevue, WA. The previous owner traded it in for a porsche apparently. It is pretty built as far as I could tell, here are some specs.

2006 GG Evolution IX MR
Appears to have, although I could be wrong

Apex RX6 turbo
Apexi Wastegate
HKS cams
HKS Cam gears
Greddy timing belt
Cusco underbraces
Rear sway(trunk)
RC 750cc injectors
Fujita CAI

And some other things, but it has a 5 speed transmission. And its an MR, so my guess is that its not a stock 5spd from another non-MR evo. Its smooth as butter, I would say it has straight cut gears. The gearbox whines a lot while in first.

Now for the problem :

About a month ago it started becoming more difficult to shift, not so smooth. Then it became pretty difficult to get in any gear, and every single time you go in reverse, without fail, you would hear a pop and the car would shake. It would go into gear, but just as long as you could deal with that noise(I just pushed it rather than did that to the clutch)

And now, I went to try and drive it and it has an INSANELY hard time getting into gear. A lot of pressure, some momentum then MAYBE...

Keep in mind I only drive it 2-3 times a week or so. So it was not driven daily in these conditions.

Now, when I feather the clutch and try to put it into gear the car starts to move, so I thought, maybe its a clutch problem?

But another part thinks it may be the synchros or it very well could be the tranny fluid just needs to be flushed and replaced.

Now, the problem is, I have no idea what kind of tranny it is, so I'm not 100% sure what fluid to go with.

ANY info would be much appreciated.

Thanks

It sounds more like a clutch problem to me but I'm no expert.

I check my oil every day before and after I drive, since its leaking oil(very very slowly) out of my greddy oil cooler.

And it could very well be the fluids, but Im not sure which fluid to get since I don't know what tranny I have.

Any ideas on the fluids?

You cant go wrong with stock Mitsubishi fluids.

If you want to go aftermarket, you could ask 20 people and get 20 different answers, some popular ones are syncromesh, royal purple, and redline. But when in doubt, just replace with stock Mitsu fluid.

K so i changed the tranny fluid for him the other day. I used 1 quart syncromesh and 2 quarts pennzoil 75 90 syn.
The problem got MARGINALLY better, i was able to get it into reverse with the motor running with only a minor grind the first dayand it would go into first now without having to be moving.
Now, 3-4 days later, it will NOT go into reverse with the motor running. If you try it grinds like all hell. I havnt tried to force it in because to me grining a gear is like watching someone bleed your child out.

But anyways. a Few things ive noticed:

First gear is EXTREMELY tough to get into if you come to a stop, drop it in neutral and take your foot off the clutch. You must push it up into first SUPER SUPER hard and try bringing the revs up a little then, it may go in.
Every gear shift is pretty rough. At least when you compare it to how the car was about 3 months ago.

Any downshift to 2nd or 4th gear you can feel something chattering inside. Its almost like a grind but it doesnt make any audible noise but you can feel it, it feels like you are trying to shift without the clutch in all the way.

Any help anyone?

Have you adjusted the clutch pedal any? I would try that before a new clutch.

Mine got like that... pedal was adjusted and it went away for about 10k miles then the clutch was toast. If you continue to drive after that point bad things will happen

Change the oil and bleed it good. Then try adjusting it, if that doesn't work you should have someone take your transmission apart and take a look.

Oh ya, and also when i have it in neutral and try to go into first, ill have the clutch FULLY depressed and try to go into first and the car will start rocking forward. Also when i have it in first or reverse and am on completly level ground ( completly level for our intensive purposes ) and i take my foot off the break it will start rolling forward just as if it was an automatic car in gear.
Sounds like the clutch is out of adjustment?
Any good links you guys recommend on as how to adjust the clutch?
I will begin searching the forums now.

If you can shift through the gears with the car off, then the tranny is fine. Id say your clutch is the culprit! as long as you did not see any chunks of metal in your tranny fluid imma bet its the clutch.
