That's the same thing that happened to my IX. Very faint tick under load and ended up with the beginning of Rod Knock. This was diagnosed by Mitsubishi Tech and covered under warrenty (New bearings rod and crank, polished crank and new rod bolts).
Like I said, I would take it to TTP and pay a few dollars to find out.

Edit: The "Off load" in third gear, taking it up to 5K and letting of the throttle, is what determined my problem. But what pushed me to take it in the first place, was a faint tick under load.

well ttp is in central florida. I live in the south florida area. There are some local shops around here that specialize in evo's. Has anyone heard anything about Japtrix or Billetdesign here in the Palm beach Florida area?

is there a way to determine for sure while driving the car if it is that? If the car does have rod knock will it feel different in performance wise?

Marco at Billet or Roger at Japtrix would be decent places local to you.

If there was Knock, the Knock Sensor would pick it up and pull timing. I'm not trying to scare you in to thinking it is Rod Knock, but better to check it out now, if you don't know. Internet diagnose can get you all kinds of answers.

that can also mean detonation ? iveblown 2 evo engines one because of wrong spark plug size and type and one because of a faulty injector any ticking sound aint gd maybe the injectors or the lifters but have it checked if the noise increase then the pistons or probably are done for u can do 1 thing change the gasket and check the lifters everything will show maybe 1 of the pistons is hitting the head mine started ticking in cold start after 10 mins it goes away still I had a blown the engine

well the car has 32,000 miles and the previous owner had the car boosting at a solid 23 psi when I got the car and ran the car in 3rd gear to see what the max boost was. Could the fuel injectors have gone bad? he never upgraded the stock fuel pump after he did all the mods I listed on the first page. I lowered the boost a little bit yesterday so now it peaks at 22 psi. I'm pretty sure the noise is coming from the area of the fuel injectors. I got gas before all this started. Could I have gotten bad gas and that gas messed up the injectors? I'm going to take the car to a shop next weekend I'm just wondering what all this could be. Thanks for all your help so far guys.

Just ask me, the previous owner.

I never touched the cams, so I don't think it's the lifters. Actually I never heard the noise that you're describing, just make sure that you ALWAYS use premium gas so you don't get detonation, specially running 23PSI. I never ever put anything other than premium gas, and Mobil 1/new filter every 3,000 miles. If you want to go to a shop I recommend Machines Gone Wild, they're located close to The Falls mall, great guys and they know tons about Evos.

One more thing, how can you hear that faint ticking sound when the car is so loud! As soon as the turbo spools there is no way you can hear anything other the CAI and exhaust. I know because I drove it for 3 years, loud as hell! Maybe I can help you with the noise, you drive and I pay attention to the engine from the passenger seat, just let me know.

Haha, well its loud but its not horribly loud lol. My mustang that I had before I was running a catless x pipe with no mufflers to the tailpipes lol, so this is quite compared to that lol. Well I here the sound even when I'm not at full throttle. I'm not sure if there could be something loose with the exhaust or if its something with the motor or if its just the sound of the fuel injectors. yeah I've only put 93 in the car so, the dealer told me that the changed the oil before they gave me the car so its got fresh oil. even at idle I hear a faint buzzing sound which when under throttle it increases to the ticking sound as I accelerate more and more until the turbo kicks in and then I can't hear it anymore because its too loud lol. But do you have any ideas what it could be? Maybe something with the transmission or throttle cable?
