Best Cam Gears On an 8 ....???
Hey guys . I was wondering what are the best cam gears to purchase for an evo 8. Or does it really matter as much as cams? I have searched but really cannot find the answer i want. I have Tomei Pro 280 cams and would like a Nice set of Cam Gears that match my good cams . Also have an AMS 35r kit.
So the question is simple . what are the best Cam gears I could buy ?

Personally i would probably go with either the Fidanza or AEM cam gears - both are a 5 bolt/spoke design, which I would prefer over the HKS 3 bolt design. I currently run a pair of the original Vishnu cam gears (also a 5 bolt design).

Unless he's doing a serious build which requires needed adjustment, you are absolutely correct. No need to add another possible failure point on a daily driver for minimal returns. MANY of the fastest and quickest cars in the States are running OE gears...

Thats what I have on my evo 8 at this time 272 HKS cams and hks cam gears, I just have the gears at zero for now. So what was the performance results from you having HKS 272 cams set to -4i/-1e? thanks.

I just used a set of AEM's 5 bolt gears and was pretty damn impressed. much larger hardware than the fidanza. the only down side is the fact that they don't use a stud like the fidanza, so if you happen to overtighten an aem you will be rethreading the aluminum. On the other hand i have seen a couple of the fidanza gears that have had bent studs.. which leads to broken studs, which leads to pistons and valves making out....
IMO there is no definitive setting for cam gears. Unless you are willing to spend the time and money to put your car onto a dyno and try different cam gear settings, it's not really worth it. I ran the -4/-1 settings on the HKS 272s primarily because it helped the topend a little and idled almost like stock. I suspect I probably lost about 100 RPM spoolup, but I didn't bother confirming this, since I stepped up to the 280s a year after I got the 272s. With the 280s I tried a lot of different settings and ultimately settled on the +2/0, since that had the best combination of spoolup and topend (idle be damned
).
