Thoughts on buying used turbos?

I see used turbos for sale frequently and every time I entertain the idea of buying like IX or something to upgrade to, I can't help but feel apprehensive about buying a used turbo.

What are your thoughts on buying a used turbo? The seller can tell you that it doesn't have any shaft play, but what about an oil leak? Was a turbo timer used all the time? How how was the turbo boosted? etc.

Thanks - King

I wouldn't buy a used one unless it was local so you can obviously go check it out for shaft play and the condition of it.

sometimes you cant really get the real truth out of anyone, so it all depends on the seller if hes/shes honest or not

So if you buy a used turbo, and then you find out it's junk - what do you do? Can you get the stock IX turbo rebuilt?

yes you can rebuild them but with the cost of the rebuild kit and then getting it rebalance you could prolly find a good condition used one for.

Well that's what I mean... how do you determine a "good condition" used turbo? It sounds like I'll more than likely just be buying NEW turbos to avoid any headaches.

To run as is....a lil risky but if you're buying a used ix turbo for a white/green/red upgrade.....its gonna be rebuilt anyways so its not that big a deal

So you can buy a used turbo, and whether is junk or not, send it to Bushur or FP and they'll still upgrade it to a Green or something? I would've thought the turbo had to still be good for them to upgrade it.

It's hard to tell personally buying it locally would be best.
