Choosing a good piston/rod combo

Im doing a lower end rebuild.

I plan on running a 35r. Id like to make 650-700 whp on c16/q16. The pump gas numbers don't matter much (500 conservative would be fine for the road). I'd be running the B. racing stage 3 head w/ hks 280s (I may sell my cams for something else, ill have too see)

I was thinking about going with the Eagle rods / JE pistons from big valley for 700.00$ (great price) but I don't think that Eagle rods are a good choice for my build. Ive heard horror stories in the honda world about eagle rods and I don't want to have a story of my own, esp. with a block with not even 16k on it.

Should I spend the extra money and ask big valley to upgrade the rods to something else, or should I break the bank and spend the 1,400k im some serious rods/pistons or should I just stay with the eagle rods (what do you think they can really handle HP wise?)

What do you guys think?

Thank you
-John

I am running a 35r on my car now and i am getting my engine build next season and my tuner/builder recommended JE pistons with Oliver Rods. Eagle rods are good but they are only good for about 550ish whp and besides you dont want to cheap out on rods.....get the Oliver. I think they are like $700 from AMS, which is what i will be running.

I think BR uses Je pistons with Crower rods and they have had success with them on their built motors.

Good luck with your build.

I've worked on a few cars with eagle rods/wiseco piston combos with far more than 550"ish" whp. My personal car is on eagle rods and is making well over 600whp with 42psi of boost for the past 6 months.

is lower end build necessary when upgrading to a 35r turbo and attempting 500ish hp?

My buddy had a 2g talon with the Eagle rods and wiseco pistons which took crap on him twice and he was pushing around 500whp. A local guy here was running the Eagle and JE combo and he threw a rod after 6000 miles of driving on meth...he drove it as a DD. I am not saying that they are bad rods but they dont have the same durability as the Oliver or Crower rods.

You can push our stock block pretty far but its not reliable. you r pretty much playing with fire.

If you're looking for 700hp, you'll want a big step up over the Eagles. If you want a worry-free rod, you can step up to the Carrillo H-beam rods without the SPS CARR bolts.
