Well, I have not got around to doing mine as of yet. It''s good to know it's nothing serious as I had thought earlier.

I had a similar problem when I had my studs replaced on my GSX. This may save the headache bud!

Anyone know for a fact how many exhaust manifold studs run through the oil galleys on the EVO head?

Actually I do still have a concern. Everyone in this thread that had the problem, mentioned that they've changed their manifold or taken it off in the past. I haven't even touched mine, and it looks exactly like the pictures posted?

Can this happen even with never touching the studs/manifold. I have 69,000 miles on the car.

The only difference I see, is it looks like it may be leaking exhaust as well, due to seeing some blackness around the exhaust manifold..

Any advice would be appreciated!

I had the same problem with my VIII and it turned out to be the manifold studs not having some kinda sealant before going on the head.

mine looks the same way...it's not going to cause any problems...so f it.

if you want you can pull the mani and each stud then put some rtv on them and re tighten.

but i have the rnr mani and thats murder the whole turbo kit has to come off.

Was your manifold taken off before?

I'm just wondering how this can happen to me, if the manifold/studs haven't been touched? Is this still possible that they came loose? If I blew the exhaust manifold gasket, could this have possibly done this?

If you know for sure it isnt leaking through the studs and the gasket is leaking then the oil has one other unfortunate source - ex valve seals

Yikes, I may try and tackle taking off the manifold this weekend...I'm pretty damn scared.

Would oil leak out there though even if the studs/nuts were torqued right though? Meaning if the gasket/studs/nuts were fine, and the seals went, would it still leak oil there?

Your exhaust manifold gasket has nothing to do with oil...or would not stop the oil if the exhaust studs were leaking.

if it was your valve stem seal your car would be smoking really bad on start up...like a huge puffs of smoke you could see from inside the car.

if it were your head gasket your car would be pushing coolant...running crappy...etc.

it's your exhaust manifold studs...i have seen it on Evos at the track and kids don't even know they have it.

So it seems to be pretty common esp if you did a turbo kit or ported exhaust mani.

You see, this is what I'm trying to ask. I've NEVER touched the exhaust manifold or studs for that matter. Why on earth would it be leaking oil then?

Is it still possible for the studs to come loose over time, without me ever touching them?

I see no extra smoke coming from the exhaust. No other side effects...

Cause it's a Mitsubishi...

They might have moved a little...and the sealent is not sealing.

This is true...although I haven't had many issues with my evo at all. This seems to be the first engine related one...

I appreciate the input though. I have tomorrow off, and may try and see what I can find, otherwise it won't be until this weekend.

I'll report back soon with my findings...
